bing carb float doesn't float

I have diagnosed my carb problem to be the float, which sinks in gas. ('79 Puch, carb 1/12/314).

Does anyone know what the float is made of (solid, or air filled), and if this is repairable.

where is the best place to buy replacement floats?

does anyone out there have a spare working float that they would be interested in selling and mailing to me?

thanks.

It is solid, not hollow. I paid $15 for one on eBay. Certain fuel additives and fuel system cleaners are the worst enemy of that kind of float. The alcohol in gasohol has been known to ruin some floats which were made of a black "styrofoam-like" material used in some older Kawasakis.

Any chemists out there? What changes a styrofoam or plastic float in such a way that first it floats and then it doesn't. It's density must change in order for that to happen. How? Is it reversible? Could it just be gasoline absorption, which maybe could be fixed by baking it for a while? Any theories out there?

Re: bing carb float doesn't float

Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) found in most us gasolines will dissolve styrofoam and like substances.

How'd you know that?

I have some Extras e-mail me your address, I'll send You 1 at no charge.

Are you sure it's the float , sometimes if the float pin is bent, it won't work proper.
