squeaky brakes?

The brakes on my 1979 yamaha chappy are rather squeaky. They work fine but they're loud....is that a bad thing (besides the annoyance)?

Re: squeaky brakes?

trya little grease on them but dont use a lot

Re: squeaky brakes?

Do NOT ever grease your brakes! The whole purpose of brakes is to stop a vehicle via friction. Lubrication (grease) is exactly what you DO NOT want on the brake shoes and drum.

Squeaky brakes are caused by a number of things. Sometimes high humidity will aggrevate the problem, as well as dirt (brake lining dust) in the brake drums.

You can take the wheel off and clean out the brake drums and lightly sand the brake shoes to get rid of squeaks but it will likely return in time. Squeaky brakes generally don't mean a problem, but it is possible that the shoes are worn severly to the point that the lining is all gone, leaving only metal to metal contact. So, if you are not sure of the wear, it might be a good idea to remove the wheel and see what there is to see.
