1979 motobecane 50v

here's my problem; i can get the engine to fire and get going, but it will only stay running if i keep the choke on, if i let off the gas the engine just dies out no matter how much gas i give it. is this an idle set problem or something else. Need help PLEASE!!!!

Might be a plugged fuel filter or the carb is sucking air. Or it just sucks. Mine does.

Re: 1979 motobecane 50v

smells like a clogged jet in the carb.. give it a thorough cleaning.

Before you put the carb back on the bike, make sure the gaskets or O-rings are air tight. Use something like Permatex 2 (non-hardening gasket sealant) on all the joints from the carb to the engine block.

Anybody know how thick the base gasket should be on the 50v?

Re: 1979 motobecane 50v

air leak

Re: 1979 motobecane 50v

Ir leak. Your Spi Seals are probably shot. Running with the choke on is cutting off the air supply through the carb and because it is getting air somewhere else the mix is correcting itself while on choke.

Clean the carb first, but I can bet you need a full rebuild.
