1980 Sachs Suburban

Looking at one on craigslist and wondering if it's a good moped for my son? I plan on rebuilding the engine (ad says it runs), redo the carb, etc... with him while he waits for his 14th bday. Is it easy to get parts? Decent moped? I talked him down to $600, says it runs, is that a decent deal? I had a moped when I was a kid in the 80s and loved it. My dad and I did the same thing, rebuild, repairs, etc... So hoping he enjoys it as well. Thanks! (edited)

Like I said on the other thread:

It depends, clean stock running bike with a 505/1D, new tires/brakes/cables that's a good deal. If it doesn't have the 505/1D motor and has the original tires, brakes, and crusty brake cables, it's worth closer to $300-400. If the paint is all messed up, bike's all rusty, etc. then it's like a $150 bike (edited)

Re: 1980 Sachs Suburban

Thanks! Good to know.

Re: 1980 Sachs Suburban

I’d recommend getting it. I fixed up my Sachs after it sat for thirty years. The parts were readily available from the Treats website and from the classifieds here. The whole bike including the engine is easy to work on and there is lots of info on this site and other sites if you get stuck on something.

Re: 1980 Sachs Suburban

Thanks! Sorry just realized I posted in the for sale forum.

Re: 1980 Sachs Suburban

It depends on your local market, and condition, but I'd say $600 is fair these days assuming it's the 505/1D motor. It's one of the most powerful stock engines out there, and if you're not "in" the moped community you won't run across them often or ever. Condition should be pretty decent at that price point.

Years ago a couple hundred was the price of a running step through, and non-runners were $100 if complete. Nowadays good luck finding anything running for $300 no matter how shitty it looks. Those shitty AMF Solex-knockoffs sell for over $300 these days.

Cool family project, good luck.

For what it's worth I paid $550 for this G3 with a 505/1D from the original owner with the original sales receipt (she traded a Puch Maxi and $300 in to the dealer for it)

That was 2 years ago but still. Mopeds are not hard to come by in Ohio at all

Re: 1980 Sachs Suburban

I'm from Ohio as well and will keep an eye out. My son has a year before he turns 14 anyhow. The guy reported back that it a /1B engine so I will probably low-ball at $300 or pass on it. Thanks for everyone's help. Great place you guys have here.
