Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

Smoeone needs to buy this and convert their older wind-up spring start to kick start. No more broken springs to replace and have a two speed to boot.

I doubt you can ship it for $45...

I know, right?

I'm sure Jack would pay for any extra shipping cost though.

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

Damn, shit I'd even take it for $45 shipped.

That's gotta be a typo.

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

Did someone grab this or hwut

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

For $45 I woulda made a powered wheelbarrow outta it.

Everybody chill!! I'm a warehouse manager so I can pass on those savings. Could be a little extra to the east coast though.

Sold!

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

Yeah, I threw in a little extra because I thought there was no way it could be shipped for $45 but Cam is well ahead of us.

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

Fucker! I needed that ;)

She's a runner. 2 speed with points ignition and regular kick start.

Hell yeah Jack! Love to see my junk get used.

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

Excellent job Jack! Looks like it came from the factory that way. How ya liking the kick start and 2 speed?

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

I like the kick start a lot. Haven't ridden it yet. Raining today. Hopefully take it out soon. I've had a 2 speed before. As I recall, Honda has it shifting at around 12-13 mph. I wish it would hold on to first gear a little longer.

Sounds really solid, great job.

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

I really wanted to swap the kickstart to my express but the whole tranny needs swapped because the kickstart side cover won't go on the one speed trans. I found that one out the hard way.

What did you need to replace to get it going?

crank bearings. clutch was fine. While I was at it, I put in new seals, piston, rings, and gaskets. Honed the cylinder as well and added a spacer to the base gasket. Sanded the front of the cylinder down some but more to go. Oh yeah, it previously had gear oil in the trans. So I had to clean that out. And the wave washer was missing.

At least I think clutch is fine. I've only heat cycled it a couple times and then weather has prevented road testing so far.

Three options that I can think of:

Run thinner oil.

Lighten the clutch shoes.

Stiffer clutch shoe springs.

Edit: remove clutch pad material to reduce circumference. Not good but if you have extras its free. (edited)

Finally a shake down ride with the "new" 2 speed engine converted to points. I love that first gear!

Where did you source piston and rings? Have a 78 that might need rings and am having trouble finding them here in Ontario Canada.

Re: 2 Speed Express motor/trans

any 40mm piston and ring set should work. So don't get too picky. Just check the ring gap. I'm actually using a qt50 piston and rings on this Express. The qt50 piston doesn't have that stupid divot in the piston crown like the stock or stock-like Honda piston does. And the qt50 piston comes with better circlips for easier installation instead of the "C" circlips. Amazon sells a bunch of scooter 40mm pistons which will work as well. They are a little bit taller from the digwell to the crown. Just install and check where the piston is at TDC and maybe add a thicker base gasket or a second base gasket if needed.

I should add. Any 40mm piston will work as long as it takes a 10 mm wrist pin.
