WTB e50 cam lobe

Drake Abrahamsson /

I remember seeing somebody selling a cam lobe (without the flywheel) from a junked e50 flywheel to make it so you can set the points without the flywheel on. Couldn’t find it when searched. My treats super stuffy crank made it so that my flywheel covers the entire points components at TDC. Anyone have what I’m looking for?

Probably Fred /

You’re doing something wrong or got wrong flywheel, The keyway on aftermarket crank is the same, actually the point gap setting @ full open is just past top dead center so all you gotta do is rotate the flywheel until the points are full open,

You may not be on the keyway, didn’t find tdc correctly, you got something going on wrong

Oh boy.. Unless treats sent me the wrong super stuffy E50 crank, I don’t know what could be wrong. My flywheel rotates clockwise. Man I’m having so much trouble with this bike (my first) and it’s just a Maxi...

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

Are you sure you didn't put your stator assy in 180゚ off?

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

campeona del mundo /

the keyway is indexed to the big end crank journal...when the piston is at tdc the keyway should be pointing towards the top end

Points are on the side of the top end like Ive seen on every other E50. Man I’m starting to feel hopeless

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

1)Post a pic of the stator

2) with the flywheel removed, move your piston to to TDC

3) Take a pic of the crank woodruff slot position

4) take a pic of the back side of the flywheel

5) Post those pics

Here’s a pic of the outside of my flywheel. A quick google image search shows me that the woodruff slot usually lines up with one of the gaps. However, on mine (pictured) it lines up directly with one of the “spokes” I guess you could call them. What gives??!

*big ol sigh of regret buying this particular moped out of a choice of like 5*

Alright- anyone got an e50 flywheel they wanna sell me???

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

No, you give up way to soon....that magneto assy is old style..it is either an old 5 wire style or and ancient 4 wire style.. How many wires do you have coming out of it and poking through the engine 4 or 5? It seems to me that the 4 wire style had flywheel holes that don't line up very well with the points.

Take out the screws in the stator plate completely and rotate so you can adjust point gap against the lobe. Gently slide and align your flywheel onto the crank but dont intall nut. Just hand install. It doesn't matter at what point in the revolution the stator is as long as the points are at the top of the lobe height. Adjust your gap. Remove flywheel. Now put your stator back in place and screw it down but not too tight. Replace your flywheel and tighten. Adjust your timing using an ohm meter. You will have to rotate your stator and then final tighten the screws. (edited)

It’s a 4 wire. I’m not sure I understand your instructions however. Wouldn’t no matter what I do with the stator, the top of the lobe height would still align with a blocked point of access because it is attached to the flywheel?

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

No, it won't. You are going to rotate the stator to a point that you can adjust your points through the window. You are then going to put it back in the correct position. Your gap is set now so you dont need to have it line up anymore.

The electrics came in 3 main types of Bosch magnetos. 6 wire which is most recent and common. The 1976 to early 1977 5 wire style and the really early pre 1976 4 wire. These ignitions do not interchange if you have stick and original wiring on your moped.

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

Nevermind, I must be tired. I am sorry. You are right...it wont make a difference as to what position you put...I will find a 4 wire flywheel here in a bit and compare it to yours...arrrggh..I apologize

No worries at all! It happens to me more often than not :) I really appreciate your help!

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

I have a flywheel like that. I don’t know who made them like that but they work fine. It’s an e50 flywheel

Re: WTB e50 cam lobe

you don't need to be 'right at tdc' to set the point gap.

did someone say this already? you can go back and forth 20-30 degrees on the cam till you can get the feeler gauge in there
