Ice Bear Rocket?? Thoughts/

Sorry to go low-brow here - but Curious if anyone has any experience with the IceBear Rocket 50cc moped?

My son is going to have to lock it outdoors at College - so we need something reasonably reliable, affordable, that will be safe in city traffic, and that wont break our heart when it gets kicked over by some jerk...

At around $700 - this looks like a decent moped?

It's a scooter, not a moped so people here don't have much experience with these. That being said, the reason most people don't mess with them is that they're really quite bad. Most Chinese scooters/engines are utter garbage. Lifans are okay and I've had good luck with SSR's

I'd recommend a used honda metropolitan or yamaha zuma. they're pretty affordable and reliable. 50cc, decent power for their class. If you want a moped... don't.

Yesss^^^ C3s are great too. I definitely don’t recommend an Icebear for a student to use let alone anyone really. I real moped would not do so well staying outside all year long.

For the past 4 years I've ridden my Honda Hobbit around campus. I kept it locked to a bike rack underneath a cover outside my dorms for the first 2 years I went to school. I chose to daily a moped because I was able to lock it to any bike rack, not buy a parking pass and not buy insurance; and as a last ditch resort pedal I could pedal it if I had to get somewhere and the bike didn't start.

Depending on your state your son might need to get a motorcycle license for any scooter, and he might not be allowed to keep it at a bicycle rack like a moped.

You are so right because you live in the state where I am,

One of the reasons why I have Mopeds over the Enduro bikes (other than Financial requirements for every motorcycle you own) is because you could park them in a bike rack or chain to pole,

If you put a small jap Enduro bike or scooter in a parking space someone just picks it up and takes it away,

Even back in the late 70s my F11 175 Kawasaki was attempted to be stolen three times in one month being parked in my friends parking spot right in front of his first floor apartment,

He/his dad was the superintendent of the complex with a apartment that had patio with a sliding door on first floor!

luckily at 2:30 am on weekends we were still up every time someone tried to pick it up and take it away,

One time we were shot at from a Delta 88 that had a trailer connected to it when we came running out yelling and then bike was dropped in the middle of a parking lot laying on its side,

Yeah a 900 pound Harley Davidson is hard to steal but a small bike is easy to pick up and steal even if the forks are locked so yeah small pedal Moped‘s for life !

Re: Ice Bear Rocket?? Thoughts/

theres scooter mopeds that has steer locking from the ignition, and 2 sets of kick stands, and theyre reliable and cheap, cheap insurance, cheap gas and you can go far too before refill, cheap fix, cheap registration, inspection is the same amount as cars inspection, you can get alarm system installed so it cant get GTA or knocked over without the person getting caught

Re: Ice Bear Rocket?? Thoughts/

IceBear makes junk. Get a used Honda Metro or a Yamaha Zuma as mentioned above. Or a Genuine Buddy or Rough House. Common and reliable.

Re: Ice Bear Rocket?? Thoughts/

My thoughts are something used that is reliable without looking nice or new. The nicer it looks the more tempting it will be for a thief to jack it. (edited)

Why is IceBear junk? They say their 50cc scooters like Vision have max speed of 40mph compared to Rough Horse 30mph. Which still, I hope it can go way faster than that. (My unidentified Genuine Buddy 50 couldn’t go faster than 73 mph and is also advertised to be like 30-50mph fast. )

Ive run across chinese scooters by a company called Geely, the plastics and registration claimed it was a 50cc two stroke, but pull off the plastics, and the top ends had '88cc' on them. The scooters exceeded 50mph. Definitely not a moped by local laws.

Buy and sell?

Cheap castings on the engines, poor quality control from the factory, 4 stroke engines require oil changes and valve adjustments, cheap carbs...the list goes on and on, some are better than others, but Ice Bear is at the bottom of the list along with Tao Tao, Genuine is a good brand, but I would ride an '80's Honda scooter before a 2022 chinese anything. my only scooter is a 1999 Hyosung, a korean brand, and I have to say the engine quality is way up there, bodywork is shit though, seat is SUPER plush, but it is fast if you cut the cdi limiting wire, 40+ with my heavy self on it, and GREAT brakes. My true mopeds, (pedal start) are all from the late '70's and still run perfect, only real maint I have done to any of them is to clean up abuse from previous owners, and new tires. They were designed as serious transportation in their home markets, and with a little understanding will run for decades with minimal care. But, you need to know what a petcock is for, and why you should close it, what a choke is, and why it is important, what points are, and how to adjust, but if you do, they are dead relable. Vintage mopeds are not for the young phone in face set, an e-bike may be your best bet, they are awesome and for sure the future. I'am selling off my moped collection to buy a Juiced Hyper Scorpion, spendy as hell, but better than any vintage moped any day, just get a damn good lock, and a cover as they are high on the theft list. Electric, FTW! (google it) no plates, no insurance.....like vintage mopeds in the '70's! :) (edited)
