Please for the love of God don't buy an LLV as your first car. Those things are just awful in every sense of reliability. If you want a unique first car you can score an 80's Civic, Camry, Subaru, or japanese pickup in good shape in Ohio if you're patient and willing to drive to get it
^ This, those things are junk, and hazardous on the highway. I used to want one, until I talked to the mailman. Read up on them as well, they are junk for anything besides what they are used for, you can get a caravan for a grand that will serve you better, and be nicer inside.

If you value yer life, get a tough car like a Sable or Taurus that is around 2005. They are great dependable cars and won't fold up like a small import.
I always got my sons the mid-sized Ford/Merc. line and when they wrecked,which is almost in evitable for new drivers, they walked away unscathed.

Jimmy you saw my truck, '89 Mitsubishi Mighty Max. That's been an Ohio truck for all of it's life and I paid $2500 for it. They're out there, especially in rural areas. You have to be patient but you can definitely find them
From my experience most of the people looking for "cheap cars" are implying $500-$1500 range... which find me a rust free Japanese truck for that.
I cant honestly remember your truck but if it was pretty rust free thats an oddity. Someone must have actually cared about that truck and washed it regularly and kept it in a garage. To be fair, you probably also got a decent truck because mitsubishi trucks are not as common and less searched for. Had it said Toyota (regardless if a Toyota is actually better or not) it would have likely been more $$$. Deals do exist, but you have to hunt for them and get lucky in most cases.

There are flyers stapled to telephone poles in every state in this country for government auctions, Jimmy.

I do check those. also check your local scrapyards and auction houses. usually they'll list anything that'd been registered (in many states by law) so you can see if theres any neat scooters and stuff. some, especially depending on state, wont list or even auction scooters or mopeds and we've scored some good deals that way - just show up and ask about em, make an offer
I remember being nervous to share the shopgoodwill back when I was snagging great deals on motoparts from there, gear and stuff. for a while I was just reselling Harley shit from them on ebay and local craigslist and making 2-3x. vintage skateboard and videogame stuff too. now folks have caught on but theres still cool deals
being a rather big gear head... i skimmed most of this and got the gist. S10's make GREAT first cars (location depending, just watch for rust in rockers/wheel wells). currently im daily'ing a '91 s10 2.5L 5spd 2wd and she gets 25/27 mpg. cant beat that in a beater daily. my skyline and rx7 stay in the garage lol
anywayyyy if you want a mailtruck for RHD, look for subaru legacy's (90's) and jeep cherokee's (also 90's) as they were used too and much MUCH more reliable than LLV's. i mean, you can do anything with money but its typically not worth it for the down time when fixing. s10's, na subaru's, civics (or any 90's honda), tacoma's... all great 1st vehicles. idk what you're into, just shop around and do some forum research to see about rust area's and possible issue's before pulling the trigger. best of luck!
