1977 Puch Kromag Freespirit De Luxe 48cc Original Unrestored

These Puch Kromag mopeds were sold from 1977-78 by Sears in the USA as the Sears Freespirit De Luxe, and under other distributors in Europe and elsewhere. The Freespirit was part of and shared components with the Puch Maxi family of mopeds, and these rides were considered the Mercedes of mopeds and popular for decades around the world. Sears sold various Puch-made models since 1957, and the Freespirit was sibling to the JC Penney Pinto/Swinger mopeds also by Puch. One of the most thorough articles I found on these machines is at http://www.icenicam.org.uk/articles5/art0085.html.

This vintage unit was last run around the block over a decade ago, and before that probably not since the 90's. It's been in the family since my Dad worked for Puch in the 70's. Family lore is that this unit was a prototype imported for demonstration to Sears, and was never actually sold at retail. It now fell back to me, and I'd love to find a home where it can be rebuilt, or it can be used to rebuild another one like it, and keep the legacy of these mopeds going. There were Haynes Manuals printed for them that are now available online. You will need to come to Santa Cruz to collect this prize, I'll buy you lunch on the wharf. Make me an offer!

Limited to three pictures here, I created a craiglist listing with lots of details photos for you to inspect the condition of this ride:

Very interesting read is that link, thanks for posting it. It is written from a decidedly European perspective and includes quite a few inaccuracies but give an overall solid review of the Free Spirit model.

These mopeds are abundant here in the US but are pretty scarce over there, it was based on the Puch X-40 (not the Maxi) with several component changes.

You’re offering a very good deal (exceptionally cheap by west coast pricing) so I’d expect it to sell pretty quickly.

Re: 1977 Puch Kromag Freespirit De Luxe 48cc Original Unrestored

Interesting... ZA50 on a Free Spirit. So the motor has been swapped, since they only came with E50 engines.

Price is ok for west coast. I paid $100 each for both of mine, but I'm a tightwad, and they were a little rougher.

GLWS.

the formula never fails. the longer the sales pitch/more fantastic the story the worse the deal is. what you have here is a dime a dozen freespirit that at some point was motor swapped, then left outside to rust to shit. 500 isnt terrible for cali prices but personally i dont believe a word of your story.

I would pay, MAYBE 200 for something like that. I'd see it listed for 200, then try to talk you down to 100.

I think a lot of the USA is like this. We wonder why we’re so messed up finically.

It’s fucking priceless dawg

Re: 1977 Puch Kromag Freespirit De Luxe 48cc Original Unrestored

It’s not terrible, the price. Pretty cool ZA 50 on a free spirit and those little magnum tank color stripes on the rear shocks is neat. If I were in the market for a free spirit I would bite. Good luck with the sale.
