New buyer looking for running moped under 800

New buyer looking for running moped under 800. Located in Chicago but willing to ship. Not really familiar with mopeds so if you have any advice for me please email kali4015@yahoo.com

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

Take your time and look around a little. Familiarize yourself with the popular models. like Puch, Motobecane, etc.

You can get a great running older bike for well under $400. $800 would ber showroom quality. If you're not real mechnical yu might look at a newer Tomos (heresy to some) but they are very reliable.

Anyway, with winter here you can take yiour time in plunging in. Go to eBay motors - Powersports - under 50cc and check out scooters and mopeds. You'll see a ton of cheap Chinese scooters on there - stay away. Stick with the European brands.

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

Oh, and since you're new - if you do find something interesting, post about it on here and we can tell you if we think it is a reasonable deal. If people hear you looking for a running ped with $800 their eyes will light up. Just be cautious and ask for advice.

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

definitely $800 can buy you a really nice moped if you know what you're looking for. do your research.

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

yeah definitely figure out what you really want. don't rush into it or else you might end up with a kinetic like i did. i was lucky enough to trade it for a columbia commuter though. o yeah!

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

I have a mint 2002 Tomos Revival. Only 450 miles on it. It's very reliable and easily modified. I'm in Cleveland, Ohio. Let me know,

Jon

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

Get a Puch! Best bike in most opinions, and respected by all. Talk to a Puch specialist (plenty on here) about what years and makes are least and most desirable to figure out what to look for and expect. Hunt around. People on here know what they're worth so I would suggest yard sales, swap meets, craigslist, police auctions, certain salvation army's have autos, and asking around. That's where you score a good deal. I would spend $600 if its really nice and it was just what I wanted. but I would rather spend $300-$400 (running good) and the rest on upgrades. $800 should get you a lot of moped. I got my first Moby for $100 running and in good shape. Check the gas tank for rust!!!! Happy hunting.

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

make sure you get one with a title or the cops will harass you, or get plates or something.

chi cops don't care for peds any more

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

800.00 should buy you a lot of moped, a Puch would be a good first moped, I'am partial to Motobecanes myself but some find them to be too complicated...Tomos makes a good machine...I don't care for thier looks but they seem to run well..I would remove the oil injection system though...If you like no-peds the yamaha qt-50 is a nice bike as is the Honda express..the Honda Pa-50-II is a great machine as well...I like japaneses bikes because if they are right they are soo reliable...but then so are Puchs...ask yourself what you want in a moped then ask us...we know a lot...I don't know as much as most on here but I do ride and wrench, not always with the best sucess but I love to tinker...whatever you choose ask all for help and Iwill help as much as I can...as will many more on here who are far more educateded in the art of moped maintenence....ask and you shall recieve! best of luck noob!

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

how do I check the engine for rust when I go to check out used peds?

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

buy taking it apart....

only way i could think of other than that is take the spark plug out and shine a flash light in but maybe somebody has a better idea

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

not the engine. the gas tank. look in the hole. Stick your finger in there. If its just mild rust there are a few methods to chemically strip it. If ts heavy rust and pitting i would pass on that bike. Of course be weary of any heavy rust on the bike. The inside of the tank is just one of those things most people don't look at.

Re: New buyer looking for running moped under 800

Matt Scout The Scouting Dcon /

Congratulations! I rode a Free Spirit to a moped rally and back, about 300 miles in 3 days. They are awesome bikes, comfortable and excellent controllability. You'll be quite pleased with it I am sure! Puchs rock!
