1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

any sort of mods i should before i re-assemble it? i just have no idea what to expect outta this thing

chassis is almost completely disassembled and just needs a good bath before painting. I've started on the motor with the goal of all new gaskets n seals. so far, all the bearings feel fine.

mods that are already planned:

1) custom exhaust with a huge baffle.

2) LED bulbs

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

there's not a ton you can do, but they do seem to be better with the stock airbox - the way the intake from airbox is connected to the downdraft carbs acts as a velocity stack, so people put high flow filters on and wind up having to downjet and lose speed.

Theyre sensitive to timing and jetting but get that set and like good tires and they'' do mid 40s.

such a rad machine

unfortunately almost all the aftermarket stuff is for the OHC ones, but you dont need it. it's a perfect 50

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

good to heard about the airbox, i already bought all the parts i needed for the stock setup.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Ride it full tuck hard like an Italian tune up. Like they used to say about old pushrod Porsche engines all they ever needed was a ride down the road at redline instead of tune up. Check the oil frequently if you are winding her out. Would love for someone here to post a video winding the little OHV noodle delivery bike out for a few smiles

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

with the semi auto i'd downshift too early sometimes. that's a good way to get the revs up...

It took a valve readjustment probably every 2000 miles, but I rolled the 4 digit speedo over twice and it was still forever awesome. It was really my first bike, i mean it wasnt technically the first but it was the one I really got into riding on and that's a place in my heart that it'll never leave

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Pushrod Fifty /

I brought a Honda 55 when I was in 8th grade. I did a top end job on it myself. It was an upgrade from my Techumseh minibike.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

i wasnt gonna disassemble the ignition and transmission over the weekend, but had to buy a flywheel puller instead. so really i just removed the flywheel nut and made a giant mess spilling old nasty oil.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

that puller is shared with a buncha other honda and more. good score anyway

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

i finally got my mopeds back on the road and got to spend a day on Honda 50.

engine exterior cleaned, ignition side completely disassembled, removed enough from the transmission to get to the crank seal, clutch disassembled+cleaned+checked, all seals removed, bearings feel great.

needs more engine interior sludge removal, actually comes off with brake cleaner if ya let it marinate a bit. between the low mileage and complete lack of anything looking worn, I'm not splitting the center cases.

Lately, My magnum is killin' it and my other E50 "random cobbled together parts" is getting tuned and sorted. Not satisfied with losing my attention to other projects, my Magnum promptly started dumping gas from the gas tank holes i patched 7 years ago... soooo i gotta re-do those patches before i get back to the Honda again.

Maybe this project will seriously get moving in year 3.

Seems I forgot to take photos, here's photos i took to send to a painting place for a quote

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Whoa sweet

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Cleaned out most of the sludge, installed new seals, assembled clutch side. Messed with shifter adjustment, need to read manual on how to adjust it properly. I have this feeling that its not tight enough yet.

I'm just gonna frequently change the oil the First year its running as the remaining sludge loosens and goes back into suspension. I didn't wanna break open the center cases since all the bearings feel good.

Those 2 little circles are how ya line up the CAM shaft to the crank right? Seemed logical to me. Rotate the crank 2Pi rad and they line up perfectly. (edited)

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

seems legit, i dont remember anymore, but I maybe have a manual somewhere you can have

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Put some ATF in the oil. Run it for a day or two and change the oil. ATF has a lot of detergent in it and will clean things out. Make sure you clean and replace the oil filter too.

I have some mercon 5 and 5w20 I need to use up.

Oil filter? This thing doesn't even have a screen in it.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

^HA that's GOOD quality!

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

it should have that lil mesh cap screen but yea.

discovery ran one on pizza grease instead of oil

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

if ya look here: https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-ca100-1962-usa_model994/partslist/E++03.html

i think you are talking about #19. that plate is held in place with a couple springs. its all in there, but theres no screen.

does it use some other physics that doesn't need a screen?

i haven't sealed the clutch cover yet, if imma do something about it now's the time (edited)

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

no not that, i was thinking of the horizontal hondas with the drain cap, but the pushrods and the 50s are just the drain bolt. But some later horizontal honda motors had like a lil cap and a tiny domed screen held up with a spring inside the drain plug. i mean, it was pretty much useless. Or they had that lil square drain filter. but what honestly would that even do, it'd just keep junk from draining out... ?

Anyway yea no filter. but also, no problem

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Puch E50 doesn't have a screen and the clutch is far more destructive, not worried. i'll probably finish engine assembly the week of turkey extravaganza.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Man I love the old push rod hondas. I would trade my cb125 for a nice specimen.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

I already have a 110cc honda toilette that fits the same niche.

But it sure is pretty

Haha. I'm not looking for a mint bike. I have all the original parts for this. Mint seat, rear fender with tail light. Bike has a little over 1500 miles. Bike can pretty much go back to this as the day I got it. Front fender has been cut to what it is now because it was already painted and had rust. I would realy like a nice old Honda step through in original or nice restored condition. This little 125 is a blast. Needs some wiring love as it was molested when I got it. Has headlight and taillight at the moment. No brake light. Has ground issues

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

I even have the original tires. I thought they were not as they were different makes but found out from research that thee front ands rear tire were different manufacturers.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

I think I'm just gonna knock the rust off and clearcoat most of the parts. Some are gonna have to be painted, probably flat black to hide imperfections. The plastic parts are all pretty rough, don't even have some.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

i tried to trade my nice OHC passport c70 for a non running but still nice OHV c100. I dunno, dude was into it and probably coulda sold the passport for more - at least it runs (and well!) but no dice. I'd def rather have the old pushrod 50 tho

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

ordered parts (circlips, exhaust, cables, rectifier, leg shield hardware, chain hole cover)... will be able to assemble the topend this weekend. Tried to last weekend, but i neglected to buy new piston pin circlips. so i disassembled the ignition stator and determined im gonna buy a CDI to replace it.

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

Luckily circlips are a lot less of a hazard in there since there's no ports to get stuck in.

Where'd you find a CDI?

Is yours the internal rotor or external?

Re: 1965 Honda PushRod 50cc Cub

so i know the ignition coil and the points have to be replaced. i have not tested the lights coil or the condensor yet. so im looking at options...

a new Honda Points ignition = $300-$500

Points + primary coil ~ $90 (adding lights or condensor pushes this over $150)

aftermarket CDI = $130-$150

theres a couple external rotor CDIs available from Malaysia (EBAY). they both use the original HT coil and magneto. i think i'm gonna go with the slightly more expensive one as that producer has their own website, warranty, and the coils are encased in epoxy instead of bare wires.
