Oh man, bummer.
I had an '80s chromoly steel tube framed Peugeot Montreal express hybrid that I loved; but a comrade needed a bike bad so they're rocking it now. I'm glad it's getting use, it's a tank.
At some point I may be able to commute by bicycle again; I used to do it almost every day when I lived in Seattle (4.5 miles one way, up the biggest hill in the city) and did so frequently when we lived in LA (12.5 miles at first, then 2.5 miles after I moved).
I also had a dahon folding bike at one point; the brake was absolutely terrible, especially on Seattle's hilly terrain. The only brake was on the rear, and it was this weird system where a nearly circular brake pad would pinch down on a disc that spun with the wheel. I set it on fire several times when going down a hill.
