Been many years since I have gone. Such a good show. I used to ho with the foreign auto supply guys. FAS in maine. John the owner purchased the tico conversion company from Africa and is now a big vanagon resto guy with tdi and any swap you can think of. Harwington show was a blast. You probably remember is for raising hell. Had a moped there one here and it was not well liked. Chappy with a straight pipe, haha

They all did, especially if you did not keep up on valve adjustments, as #3 was the most undercooled cyl.

Trying to remember why that was....did the oil cooler block the air...or? There was some reason for it. The other thing that killed these was not having the foam gasket around engine tin and body work and not having the hoses from the shroud to heater boxes or blocking them off, the movement of air within the shroud is critical, there were some flaps in there as well if they got hung up it was bad for the engine as well. Man this is an analog flashback... ;D

I probably owned 25+ bugs back then and one of the 67's I had got driven to Philly and back for a weekend getaway ( 600 mile round trip). Ran great. Driving to the dealership Monday morning for work, heard the dreaded THUNK. Broken #3 exhaust valve. It was gonna be a quick flip , but the next owner got a rebuilt engine when I sold it!

The one my UNC had had a boxer engine 411 or something from a micricamper the 2nd piston would always go. It was sleeved so you fix it but it's from not following the maintenance schedules the cams and crank and timing chain ECT. If you follow it they run like tops with 400000+ miles

I hope not. Interior vinyl below rear window will need some freshening up, but that’s all I can see. I’ll know more next weekend when I see it in person. I was supposed to go this weekend, but the snowstorm kinda put a damper on things.

I had no idea Super beetles suck that bad.

Update: I’m meeting with the seller this coming Saturday morning at my mechanic’s shop. My mechanic is gonna put it up on the lift and poke around for rust in the places that rust tends to hide, including the sheet metal that the battery resides on, the heater channels, below the rear window, heater boxes and floor boards. He’s also gonna do a compression check on all the engine cylinders, with a close eye on the #3 cylinder. If it all checks out, I’ll be bringing it home on Saturday and then towing it here to VA in the spring. Fingers crossed.

Seller says there’s no rust anywhere on this car. It was supposedly a Cali car for more than half of its life and then garage kept up north for the other half. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we don’t find any rust in the undercarriage. We’ll soon find out!

They do and they don't, it's the front suspension, stuff wears and you get a shake at about 50mph. The standard suspension is far less prone to this. Also the altered shape is considered less collectable by purists. I had several, they were fine once the front end was gone through, the "auto stick" trans is straight garbage though.

My super was an auto, converted to manual. Very easy switch.

Don’t forget to check for cracked heads. Wanna be flower children apparently drive around with leaking manifold boots and that lean condition gets the heads way too hot.

When I bought my 74, the engine was doing the shakey shake at idle. It was a vacuum leak on the left boot.

I really miss having an old VW.

I just googled more about that. Cause I remembered that after having some work done by a mechanic, I was told I had a crack but it was not likely to be a problem for a while.

I guess cracks are pretty common and not usually cause for concern unless it runs to the spark hole. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Still, if the intake boots aren’t fresh, that would be a first tune up item for me.

I wonder if the exhaust tips could be put on a moped to hear that chirp?
