If we'd dropped our romance with manual shift decades ago we'd be further along the curve toward CVT. And if you really get into arguing this with anyone outside of pure race/track drivers, manual shifting is more a romantic attachment than anything 99 percent of us would ever, or are even skillful enough to, make real use of.
I'd Looooooooooooooooooooooooooove a really well designed, dependable, cvt in my car and truck... and motorcycle in 2020. Unfortunately it'll never get here in time to save the internal combustion engine since electrics are naturally continuous in torque or already capable of being so. (edited)
