Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

^cool, they do handle off road pretty well, great picture!

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Dan: This is Jack Nielsen from Simsbury, purchased the PA50 motor from you last summer.

When I got married 50 years ago my wife had a blue beetle and she said that was the only reason I married her. We drove that bug up all over the east coast and I used it for years as a daily commuter into NYC. One night I got rear ended and pushed into another vehicle, pushing in both the front and rear bumpers. Well I had never dropped the collision insurance so the insurance company paid me $500 for the bug. The vehicle still ran, so I removed the bumpers and brackets and installed 4

ft lengths of 2x8 lumber instead. Drove the vehicle for a few more years till the motor finally gave out. Dan the bug ran great in the winter snow and ice. They are great vehicles and I would recommend getting one. Look on YouTube for Mustie1. He does lists of work on repairing and restoring old VW’s. Good luck - Jack

Not too bad, its lifted and running fox shocks 2.0 with coil overs. Also a pretty hopped up type 4 engine. Actually putting a clutch in it right now, started to not fully disengage during my last long trip all through California about 2500 mile trip.

Sadly I sold my first vw pretty recently, once I got a bus it was much more practical. Her name was black beauty.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

^ OMG.....soooo amazing, unfortunately, really too nice to drive. :/

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

I have a few acvws. Great summer cars, great winter cars but the salty roads here in ny kills them right quick. Rust is your constant enemy. Mine go to bed for the winter.

Lots of parts as well if interested. Been into the hobby for many years.

Haha! True.

But let’s be honest... the harley weekend guys riding to the bar have more plastic chrome on their ride than all of ours combined.

Love the timing light on the passenger seat... I hear it.

Nice bug!

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

I had a 72 superbettle it was great but the undercarriage got weak and the car would shake at certain speeds. It had tons of miles on it and little rust. I did some minor bodywork to it and touched up with paint mixed at an auto parts store. I took the plastic off of the dash and it looked like a 60's car underneath. Found some seats that were mint. The thing that sucked about driving it was that everyone knew how slow they are and just wanted pass me at the first opportunity.

If you want one, try to find one that is as original and untouched as possible because if they have have too many knockoff parts on them they really become nightmares.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Yep, get German parts for sure, ie fuel pumps electrical etc, Brazilian are a coin toss for working at all. Your biggest enemy is rust, the Super would shake at certain speeds, about 50 is what I remember, worn front end parts. If I lived somewhere like AZ, New Mexico etc I would have an air cooled for sure, so simple, and even though they have become true antiques, are still serviceable, and very tough.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

That's the notorious super beetle death wobble. Worn front bushings cause that.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Good luck getting anything German for anything air-cooled VW anymore. I remember when I had my bus back in early 90's I would go to the local imports place that was owned buy a guy who raced formula Vee's and he knew I only wanted German parts and every time I went in there he would come back to the counter with a dusty faded part in the box and say "well, you're getting the last one of these my man!"

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

I do still have a 72 Vert, Dan and I am in your neck of the woods. I will pull it out of the garage and get a pic for you, and this thread, which has turned to a pretty cool Air cooled VW Vibe for sure.

Bus depot, Wolfsburg west, west coast metric. All have quality parts.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Well "quality" is a relative term and always has been, especially with air cooled vw's. They were never porsches and were never meant to be. I currently have the 72 Beetle, 3 mk1 rabbits and a rabbit pickup so I am familiar with the vw parts houses and I didn't say you couldn't get parts for them but the days of the German quality oem parts for these babies are long gone. I don't remember the last time I bought a bosch part that was made in Germany. There are still a few bits here and there of course and the internet has helped expose the last few parts stashes available but these days you just have to hope for the Brazilian and Mexican assembly line standards to come up but I doubt that will happen. Not when the vast majority of the parts being manufactured are destined for trailer queens and not daily drivers and the manufacturers are aware of this.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

You have to pay for quality, I drive the shit outta my bus. Usually 4000 miles at a time and you figure out who makes quality parts and who makes shit. There is a growing aftermarket support for vws as well now that people have shown interest in them, flip side is now most buses are unaffordable. Glad I bought mine years ago.

Empi = every mistake passes inspection

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Yeah exacty, and I remember a time when EMPI were very good quality parts, now not so much. It's gotten to the point where you can't even pay for quality if you wanted to because no one else does and all the manufacturers have followed the pack in order to stay competitive.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

I mean there is a reason why bosch starters/alternators/coils/ign. modules etc. That I used to have to pay 2-300+ for 25 YEARS ago are now 150 or less. They didn't pull that off by keeping the German workforce busy.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

The 76 is a good one for sure. I had two buses, a 76 and a 79, both weekenders. Is yours still fuel injected or did you switch to carbs? ..and yeah you can drive the crap out of the type 4 engine. That's the only one to have in a driver bus in my opinion.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

One of the few things I saved all these years from my bus days is a rebuilt 1700 pancake motor that my plan is to build out to a 2 liter and put in my Vert someday. I scored a set of 94mm Kolbenschmidt pistons and jugs for $100 from a dusty corner of my local imports parts house probably 15 years ago now when they were getting rid of old inventory. (edited)

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Hmmm, it HAS been forever since I had an air cooled, I had no idea you could not get Bosch parts anymore...sad, but so many fewer on the road I guess it makes sense, MN had the unique issue of the body's disintegrating way before the mechanical components ever did. I knew of a wrecking yard out in the sticks, guy had wrecked/rusted VW of every description, acres of them. He sold semi loads of axles/trans-axles engines/cores/glass to guys from out west were the body's held up but everything else was worn out. When my buddy's and I were messing with these back in mid-eighties we would go out there and grab distributors, coils starters almost all oem stuff for stupid cheap, guy would let us go out and grab whatever, take a look when we came back to the house go "eh, ya got $40.00?" for what was several hundred dollars worth of stuff, he just liked that we were still driving them and fixing them ourselves. Those were the days. :)

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Yes! Those were the days! Junk yard crawling is still one of my favorite pass times. There are a few yards left out here that you can pull your own parts. Bosch is alive and well (more or less) you just are hard pressed to find any of their parts still made in the motherland is all.

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

I would honestly take my chances with used oem Bosch stuff, even if I had to clean it up some, just watched one of those "will it start after 30 yrs sitting vids on u-tube" and the guy bought a new distributor, points, condenser and coil, no dice, cleaned the old stuff including points, installed and it fired and ran, well! The quality is just not there, granted it is old-tech, but there is no demand for it anymore, knock offs are just that, knock them off the bench and leave them there. :)

Re: Thinking about Air Cooled VWs... who’s got em?

Shes far from stock, forged internals, amc big valve heads, 40 webers, vintage speed 2400cc exhaust, web cam 86 grind, and various other goodies. With the lift and swampers I had to upgrade the CV shafts to high angle chromoly cages, balls, center sections.
