Re: Good car for the crooks! LOL!

"police car must call off chase because low on gasoline" is something that happens so often it doesn't make the news.

Re: Good car for the crooks! LOL!

I would imagine the criminals run out of gas more often than the cops, but I can't think of a worse use for an electric car....except maybe very local patrol....someone must have thought it an ok idea, maybe getting a kick back from tesla to long term test the product? It is certainly fast enough...for a while...(edited)

"don ohio posting stupidity because he's low on brain power" is something

that happens so often here it doesn't surprise anyone.

Sounds like more wise spending of our tax dollars!

Re: Good car for the crooks! LOL!

Actually is probably a pretty wise spending of tax dollars if you're driving around giving tickets all day or sitting behind a billboard on the highway, AC blasting while yer masturbating to porn on your phone waiting for someone to speed by, you'd spend a lot less taxpayer money on gas. but it's a more expensive car to start out with, probably. gas isn't cheap in cali.

I don't know why I respond to these. I should just let yall have your fairytales

probably not, cop cars are hella expensive with all the shit they do to them. Teslas are already fast with good suspension.

Re: Good car for the crooks! LOL!

yeah that was why I added the "probably". Like as I was writing it I was already questioning it, like an electric police car should be more expensive initially... right?

turns out most police get special deals through a "cooperative purchase program" essentially all the districts buy in bulk and the price goes way down, the heavily upgraded police versions wind up often cheaper than you'd pay as a consumer for the standard version. So the fact that it's an electric police car doesn't make it more expensive, but the fact that it's basically a one-off cop car does. But you're right, a one-off interceptor SUV is more than a high-end Tesla model S, and more than 3x the cost of a Model 3.

also electric is alot lower maintenance. But actually the biggest cost on a police car if you add up fuel mileage and repairs and initial cost etc etc is depreciation. pretty much true for any equipment. but it's also a kinda shitty metric cuz they're not selling the sed cars at final "fair values" but depreciations still a tool if you're comparing cot of ownership and it's unsurprisingly the biggest factor. and for electrics, it's way higher. (in large part because of tax incentives that ONLY incentivize buying NEW electric vehicles...)

TLDR: a lotta bullshit exists around electric cars, police cars, taxes and depreciation, but assuming that an electric police car is automatically a waste of tax dollars shows a lack of understanding and appears to come more from unfounded bias against "progressive" changes (which include e-vehicles) than from sound arguments on a cost basis.

but assuming that an electric police car is automatically a waste of tax dollars shows a lack of understanding

Base Chevy Malibus start at $22,095

Base Tesla Model 3 start at $35,000 (which, admittedly is lower than expected)

I understand the police department gets special deals but the Tesla was going to be at an inflated price compared to the Malibu. Also, take into consideration that most shops are equipped to work on a Malibu however the Tesla will likely require specialized shops with specialized tools. Keep in mind there is plenty of aftermarket parts available for the regular hill billy edition malibu... I doubt there is a strong after market for the Tesla considering up until recently the base model Tesla was around $70K starting. Your average blue collar dude just cant afford to drive one meaning aftermarket demand is down.

So what i saw was... Initial cost was higher and maintenance will likely be higher. So its only fair to assume that additional tax dollars went into the enforcement of traffic laws that many Americans already feel we waste too much money on. Personally Id rather our taxes go towards infrastructure.

Overpriced Parts /

I can fill up my van with 26 gallons of gas in about five minutes or any of my other vehicles way less than that and I could go like almost 4-500 miles range, and that are vehicles it that are 18 to 32 years old years old!

Can you do that with electric car? Answer no,

I can’t believe how dumb people in our country are!

We are productive because of energy and resources taken from the ground/earth! energy cannot be produced, it can only be change from one form or another! to be green in one area of the earth is to be brown in another!

Wow why can’t anybody except that! We could be 100 percent green in in USA and everywhere else in the world will be horrible polluting,

Grow a set of balls you/us USA people that’s all I Gotta say!

We don't need any of these country’s that pollute air or water or rape the earth with no restrictions like China, India, Brazil, Africa so many other so-called countries, whatsoeverto be green here!

Not to mention when you get your computer recycled it goes over there contaminating everything it’s not recycled cleanly,

We can produce energy cleaner than anybody in the world and save the whole world and many world wars, But we don’t wanna hurt anybody’s feelings now ! Everything is about feelings nowadays not facts, Well at least 51% of the country don’t want to Hurt anybody’s feelings even though it kills the earth, good thing we’re we are we are republic! Not a democracy!

Everybody in this country who could choose to be a millionaire aren't, but the rest they’re lazy as hell and they want to take money from people who are millionaires who aren’t lazy as hell, kind a wish I was in my late 80s right now because I things are going to get ugly quick!

Just watch in a few years all the states that legalized weed are going to want free government weed, free government housing, free government healthcare, free welfare, free food, free government transportation, free everything and free phone in their face!

I mean 40 some years ago we knew all the stuff in the future if you were to under stand this theme song ha ha,

though I’m happy of that sitcom when it comes to equality,

I can’t wait to get these young folks don’t know nothing about anything that matters or what to do because they go by feelings not facts, Well I’ll be gone by then!

Re: Good car for the crooks! LOL!

"free phone in their face!" Is going to be my next song title.

Get with the times or get left behind. Just because you don't understand the benefits of emerging technology doesn't mean you need to be scared and hostile towards it.

Yeah for sure I get it. And you're not wrong, I just wanted to express that there's a lot more to it. And sure a base Tesla is more than the malibu, but it's pretty comparable to the more popular chargers and crwn vics. especially considering incentives. Then when you look at like the police SUV's (which tbh are usually pretty unnecessary for a dude to just sit in all day watching cars go by waiting for prey) they're a whole additional malibu more expensive than even the fancier Model S 85's (100-115k for the ford interceptor SUV's vs 80k for tesla S w bigger 85 battery)

And for working on it, most shops actually can do most of the maintenance, that's a big advantage for electrics - they rarely need engine work; all you're left with is the brake and tire and general maintenance that's roughly the same for any car.

I think alotta aftermarket demand is down too because you have these great incentives for new but nothing for used. But you can get a used leaf or something pretty cheap still anyway.

Point is, and we agree on this: police waste alotta money that'd be better spent elsewhere. But buying an electric instead of traditional I don't think is a worthwhile thing to complain about given the minor (and argually financially beneficial) impact of that choice versus a plethora of other issues.

Re: Good car for the crooks! LOL!

^ True, and wow, no idea The Explorer interceptors are around the 100k mark, you sure about that? MAJOR depreciation going on then as used ones with 100-140k can be had for about 10 grand! Almost all the cop cars in MN are Explorers, most think it is due to the awd, but the cops say it is mainly due to back seat room, they do love the awd, the Taurus and Charger (Crown Vic is no longer made) have very small back seats, especially once the cage is installed, so hard to transport people. Never been in a Tesla, so not sure how they compare room wise. Tesla's sure are fast, but I wonder, at high speeds if the battery depletes far faster than usual, I understand that in a gas car you burn more fuel at high speed, just wonder if the rates of discharge are comparable to increased gas use at speed? I don't think we will be seeing them anytime soon, as here we idle away 1000's of gallons of gas keeping the heater going! :) I could be wrong, but it is really hard to imagine a battery capable of that, but I know they are improving...I guess once quick charge gets real the electric will be practical for commercial and or Law Enforcement use.
