Re: New cars are shit

Paola said:` Are you a mechanic, Don Ohio? I bet not.'

You would lose your bet. I have been working on engines since before we ran Hobby Stock class in 1969. No, I don't do it for my bread and cheese, especially not now, with all these horribly engineered nightmares ready to throw a computer code or a timing belt or a component you can barely get your wrenches onto.

Takes special tools to work on these cars and make any time doing it. No fun. I work on cars to help people that CAN'T pay me, NOT to make money at it. If they have a difficult job, I take my lumps.

Re: New cars are shit

The thing is, love or hate new cars, they will never go back to what was, if you prefer older designs, go to states where they don't rust and grab one, the old days are gone forever...getting all wound up over it changes nothing. It IS ok to miss the simple designs though. :)

They don't have to go back to older, simpler,Stephen……….I'll go back and get what I want. I don't have to buy their junky,bad-looking over-engineered marvels. LOL!

That way I won't miss their simpler, yet superior designs.

I went 350 miles to get the rust-free van I wanted. I'll go farther than that to get the daily driver I want

Uncovered the 05 Mustang today......started it up,ran fine but has a coolant leak. 100K miles so it's probably a water pump. Easy Peesy on the RWD with engine facing you.

P.S.: I and a lot of others working on cars part-time would be hard put if not for YouTube.com and forums helping us work on these screwball-engineered atrocities.LOL!(edited)

STP ? They used that stuff on like Conestoga wagons, right? You gotta get with the new millenium snake oil. Seafoam bro. Claims everything. Does nothing. Cheap modern oils do more now than STP claimed to do 50 years ago.

You’ll like this one.

Every now and then i’ll get one in for inspection and an oil change and it only has a few hundred, maybe 1000 miles on it since the previous year. I drain the oil into a 5qt jug and run it in my truck. 5w20, 5w30, 0w20, whatever. That truck don’t give a damn. I haven’t bought oil for it in years. Can’t remember when i replaced the filter last, but i should get around to it soon before it rusts a hole in it.

A quart or so falls out every month so i just add more. So that’s maybe 3-4qts between oil changes every 3000 miles, if i were to actually change the oil, and if i had a working odometer to know when 3000 miles has passed. Truck doesn’t get an oil change, more like an oil exchange i guess.

I’ve been itchin’ to pull that little chevy motor out and drop some serious displacement under the hood for years, but it won’t fucking die. No gauges, no idiot lights, no snake oil, no fucks given.

Smells hot? Add coolant

Sounds loud? Add oil

Won’t start? Add the cheapest gas i can find.

Repeat. ;)

I think this was pretty much the turning point, but we did make it 2 full pages of communally agreeing about the frustrating issues of repair and planned obsolescence of new cars while acknowledging the merits of safety and efficiency, before this tipped us toward the decay into condescending snobbery

Then you are in fact NOT a mechanic by trade. Pay up, buttercup.

Re: New cars are shit

Angry Hipster /

I wrote a list about a page long of all the fucked up shit that plagues modern designed cars.

Then I get told drilling out spark plugs and risking metal flakes in the engine is good and changing timing belts is enjoyable..

Then feelings get intertwined and Don's new stalker girlfriend has to chime in and the shitshow begins.

Nevertheless, the modern fanboy shit mobile club gets what they want.. more shitty cars and shitty designs ahead. More mechanics contorting and going through hell to access shitty components.. you guys win have fun with your new shit mobiles!

I'll drive an old luxo barge and enjoy fine engineering and ease of repair. It will cost me some fuel sure, but no car payment, no repair bill, and no stupid drilling into the cylinder head and helicoil nonsense.

Re: New cars are shit

Man, you are seriously angry about this, as you just said, buy the kind of car you like and don't worry about the others, you don't have to fix them, you really didn't think the auto industry would lean back towards easy serviceability because you pointed out the faults? Did you? Only about 10% of anybody wants to work on a car anymore and that number is shrinking as it is made more difficult and expensive to do so, let it go. We are lucky here, you can buy any kind of car you can afford.

Re: New cars are shit

Angry Hipster /

Being angry at the loss of an easily serviceable car for the masses is reasonable.

I have voted with my dollars and have not contributed to the problem by buying a new car, if only others demanded a non shitty car things would get much better.

Re: New cars are shit

Let them go to blazes,Tom. Long as we can afford to buy the vastly more beautiful and easy to repair RWD beauties.

I was at a car show the other day. Had a beautiful green metallic 57 Ford all shined up, and a 57 Chevy in aqua . Bunch of others, hi-powered 68 Mustang GT in blue.

I got there too late to get out and lookie-lou, but driving besides them slowly was a hoot. Corvettes and a Firebird too.

They were also checking out my freshly washed 2004, ceramic tri-coat Lincoln LS, you bet.

Areostars are RWD or AWD, most were RWD.

Re: New cars are shit

Jimmy Cincinnati /

Self-righteous indignation from the idiot troll that I am, Madame Paola.

Wait... Don = Paola? The plot thickens!

Re: New cars are shit

you "old-car" "fanboys" are really focused on a few specific old cars too. I mean some 70's muscle cars were very cool and have been well maintained and keep good parts availability. But personally I love the Pinto and the Gremlin, however they've not aged well, or weren't particularly well received at the time. the chevette is one of my favorite 70s cars but nobody's really restoring those (with a 0-60 in just under 20 seconds!) Or the trabant, 2 stroke! and made out of plastic since the 50's or 60s....

And I'm sure old guys back then griped about how the new underpowered lighter weight cars coming out in the 70's were nothing like their classic mercury or studebakers (while also selectively ignoring the prior car generation's flops like the Edsel)

Again I'm not really disagreeing, I prefer the look and similicity of older cars generally also. But wanna keep grounded here and make sure we're not just comparing the best of the past against the worst of today...

Re: New cars are shit

Angry Hipster /

Trabant is Soviet nonsense.. that being said it had to be caveman simple to repair so even it would be a better friend to the poor commuter then a used modern shitmobile with a bad transmission or head gasket.

Even in the 1970s you had traditional cast iron engines that were good and then you had some models that were intended to break the mold and were developed with new and different designs... ie Chevy Vega and such... so as long as you stayed away from the science project cars you would be ok. Today all cars are science projects..

I would hate to spend so much money to be a beta tester.

All this to say you're average random 1970s car would be a good bet and as long as you didn't crash them or subject them to road salt you could easily have the engine and transmission serviced and continue to drive the car into the modern era and beyond.

Our modern cars are built so poorly that most will be in the junkyard by 20 years, much less 40 or more.

Re: New cars are shit

Lots of cars developed a reputation as being shit just because they were using tech that wasnt common and mechanics didnt read service bulletins.

Any of the early overhead cam, aluminum, fuel injected, etc .. engines.

Hell, into the '60s you still had flathead or die people.

And lots of stuff developed a reputation for being shit because it was shit.

I've heard people try and defend the HT4100 engines before, and I once heard an old guy say the GM Oldsmobile diesels were good.

I know the Vegas were shit due to craptasic cutting edge designs.

But most of vehicles from the 70s were easy to service well designed cars and we can't say that about the cars of today.

That is ultimately my point... You can't keep modern cars on the roads and pass them down easily like you can with the old stuff. The old stuff was meant to be repaired while the new cars aren't and it fucks over people time and time again.

Re: New cars are shit

Hatred of difficult to repair planned obsolesence plastic shit cars does not equal hatred of all things new.

Hatred of shit is hatred of shit no matter how you try to skew it.

Re: New cars are shit

Dirty30 Dillon /

When they make new cars that are planned for obsolescence, there is a great side effect where bad mechanics are also made obsolete.

Re: New cars are shit

Angry Hipster /

More than likely the opposite is true.

Another side effect is you get weird fanboys who take their car to the dealership and sit next to the Kotex machine while pretending to have automotive experience.(edited)

The Flatheads Forever mantra.... My dad even skipped a step. My grandparents shed, where he worked on his XK140 in the late 60s, had "Overhead Cams Forever" scrawled on the wall.

Of course it wound up with a boring old Chevy 327 after they did something catastrophic to the XK's valve train.
