Re: What music are you into?

I just finished a semester of "Music in World Cultures" at university, which did a decent job of busting me out of my narrow folk & punk tastes. Here are some highlights:

Maori - culturally / linguistically closely enough related to Hawaiian that I can pick out what they're singing about, but very different musically:

Afrobeat. Dude's singing about Nigerian politics, but may as well say the same things about Americans!

Sephardic Jews from Turkey singing a wedding song:

Redbone - Wounded Knee:

Inuits throat singing:

Mongolians throat singing to techno:

From Brazil, Mas que nada:

From Bolivia, Caporales:

Some relaxing Japanese koto & shuakuhachi:

And finally a koto & shakuhachi cover of Lady Gaga:

Re: What music are you into?

love me some Fela Kuti, not as familiar with his kids work. this is another good band from that era, Vis a Vis, great synth lines with the first synth i ever owned, the univox minikorg.

Re: What music are you into?

Sergio mendes introduced by eartha kitt. Good stuff.

Ward E. Richardson /

John Hiatt - The Wreck of the Barbie Ferrari

he finds them huddled by the toy box

and splatters them all

the ken and the midge

and the skipper doll

they look like a family but

they're really not at all

Re: What music are you into?

I wanted to revive this thread, because many folks (myself included, at times) seem to be interested in here in the big world (and on the OT) is to focus on our differences; arguing about politics, religion, and other stupid shit.

That said, everyone likes music.

I myself like all kinds of music spanning the last 100 years (and more if you count classical).

This one just happens to be the last one I listened to on the ol' YouTube. It's ridiculous, insanely great, and one I happened to have grown up with:

...things were a little messed up in the late 1970s during the punk and new wave era of rock music if you lived somewhere very rural and very limited choice of radio stations available... lol

Focus is a great band and Jan Akkerman a brilliant guitar player. I've seen him live a couple of times and he's still killing it.

If you like Focus you might also like Jan's other band, Brainbox

Re: What music are you into?

Jan Akkerman is a bad-ass, and highly under-appreciated here in the USA. Van Leer is also a very talented musician, as well.

I always found it interesting that the original guitarist of the Vandals was Jan Nils Ackerman (though I have seen his name spelled differently, and this seems to be an Americanized version of a Dutch surname). Pretty sure they were are not related, as the younger Jan is from Southern California, USA. (edited)

Re: What music are you into?

Ackermann is probably a German surname. It is not an uncommon surname as it means "man of the field" so basically a farmer.

I've also been listening to this masterpiece a lot.

Re: What music are you into?

If you have Spotify here's a playlist i made, it's not necessarily my favourite songs, just a list i keep adding songs to that i like.
