Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Jimmy Cincinnati /

Anyone ever been there? I have gone there for years... rarely buy anything. Typically I go there get pissed off over the outrageous prices then forget about the place for a few years. Then one day Ill be bored and think to myself, "He wasnt that bad was he?" So i go again and the cycle continues. Ironically today I was doing a random search of salvage motorcycles (like motorcycle porn to me) and stumbled across a pic of his place from like 6 years ago. I got a kick out of the pic below as the red suzuki gopher in the front I bought off him several years ago for $200. I was nappy, didnt run, and had not title but for whatever reason I bought it. One of the better deals from that place (he once quoted me $75 for a puch cylinder head). Took it home and about an hour later had that thing purring like a kitten. Ran so good. Das Riot bought it off me a few months later and took it to Toledo. From what Ive been told it still runs and rides to this day.

Any other good junkyard stories?

Overpriced Parts /

I used to get stuff from this last moped motorcycle junkyard anywhere near me.

But last few years it's never open/guy is never here.

It may all be gone now who knows.

No heat no real lights but it mostly indoors and had like 150 bikes that were near complete that more then half were mopeds.

Shared space that had generators, industrial engines, engine parts you name it

All kind of weird stuff you could build a apocalypse vehicle out of.

Thats awesome! I love those hidden little coves of mopeds. There are few left, seems like the guys that have them are all older and wanting to sell it off. How old are those pics? There is alot of good bikes there, Id love to get my hands on that Jawa 210 sport (red top tank). I think that would be a cool bike with an A35 mounted on it.

I went to a motorcycle salvage yard earlier this year in Nashville TN. A-1 Fun cycles. The guy was kind of an asshole and the prices were crazy. He wanted $500 for a non running, none complete, crusty maxi. I cant even counter at a price that high. Its a shame too, he has a nearly complete Honda NS50 there I want thats been rotting in the weather for years... I know he would easily want $500+ for the thing without a title.

I have a guy like that here with a motorcycle junkyard in Millington, just outside of Memphis. Same exact thing, a bunch of awesome old motorcycles and quite a few mopeds just sitting out in the elements rusting away and he wants ridiculous prices for them. It's a shame, really. I did score a Garelli Monza from him for $175, though.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Overpriced Parts /

Pictures are maybe 2 years ago?

You can't see it from pictures but like 70 mopeds of everykind in the back there in picture. Floor is wet back there though so bikes rims would suffer but 2 years ago not so bad.

Ya prices not bad like 100-200$ for offbrand bikes but bikes that have some rust on them and seized engines for me not worth it.

I'll never pay the nuts prices that some pay for a normal moped.

Though I have paid good money for clean low mileage personal bikes I don't normally.

I pay like 100-$150 for a free turning non-runner, 50-100$ for seized non runner and maybe 2 to 300$ at most for a nice shape running bike.

again mint or something special ya I'll pay more.

The ok puch and tomos bikes were mostly not for sale, not cheep anyway

There was some 5 star generals there but Sachs A engines that were seized, tanks with no lock cap and rust in them and had bad seats so just junk in my eyes.

On other side several restorable 2t street bikes like rd 400 and water buffaloes

Though no titles.

The old phone number I have just rings and rings and it's over an hour and a half away in the boonies. I went there a few times just to try to see but all locked up/gate locked/no one there though through one window looks like building is still full of stuff.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

My go to junk yard is just south of Minneapolis. They have it all and I mean it all. I have been going there for over 20 years for parts. After so long they have been giving me some good deals.

1st picture Motorcycles

2nd Picture enduro & dirt bikes.

3rd picture of a very cool twin cylinder moped conversion at least I think it was a conversion either way this was very cool.

Their prices on bikes are a little steep but they are the only ones in the area with CZ parts and they also have a few Sachs too. The have a Moped area that I used long ago for my Garelli project.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

^ I know that place! It takes some time to get good deals, but they DO have a slice of everything, too bad most of the moped stuff has rusted away, back in the late '80's there were still good pickings, but all outside and here, the weather is a killer. They do have a great selection of used motorcycles though.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Jimmy? This looks like the place that the sadly missed Ike Fist took me to several years ago.Is it out Ike's way? don-ohio

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Don, I was super bummed when i heard about IKE. I had no idea he passed until months after it happened. I had no idea. What ever became of his wife?

Anywho, I highly doubt this is the place Ike took you to as it would have been like 40-50 miles from his place in Georgetown. Its not even 10 minutes from my place. Its located on Wooster Pike near Hyde Park in Cincinnati. The place I believe Ike took you too is located in Mt. Orab Ohio; a place I know as "Trader Chris." Its possible it has another name, but thats the only way Ive ever been able to identify it.

Trader Chris is a joke. I mean, I dont recall him being rude or mean but he is full of BS and wants way too much money for his rusty junk. He had a row of mopeds out there with weeds heavily overtaking them (this was years ago). He would want at least $200-$300 for a moped, and that would be a rusty, locked pile of crap. I think he was maybe 10 minutes or so from Ike's place.

Ken, dont mean to pry but whats the name of that place? I wouldn't mind looking them up. I understand if you don't want to reveal your source tho.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Didn't deal with Trader Chris, just talked to him.

He had diabetes,so I informed him of how the Atkins' diet kills diabetes. Don't know if he took my advice or not. don-ohio (:^)

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Diabetes, that is Trader Chris.

I wonder if he is still kicking. Seemed like he was always sickly anytime I would swing by. Wonder what happened to his junkyard.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

It seems like all the good junkyards are getting grabbed up by multinational corporations trying to cash in on the high price of scrap. Now that china is hurting we'll see if that swings the other direction... still lots of cheap junk out there.

unfortunately most people who have cool junk, have it because they've been charging bogus prices for years and years and nobody has bought it.

sport wheels is unique and awesome, their prices are really reasonable but the mopeds are real picked over. You can get really good deals on gas tanks and small moto bits. dirtbike pipes are like 20 bucks.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Jimmy Cincinnati /

Seems like the last 15 years scrap yards have just died off... well the fun ones with cool stuff. My father would take me to different junkyards when i was a kid and I would find mopeds all the time. Purchased an AMF Roadmaster (V1 version) for $50 from one out in Blanchester Oh when I was 19. Got it running as it sat. Use to find Puchs, Tomos, Motobecanes, and etc cheap. There was a time you could buy a magnum from a junk yard for around $100, and it would be mostly complete. I had a few.

But your right. They probably have those bikes still cause they want too much money for the things. Sucks. Most of Skips bikes are rotting away, why not sell a part for $20 rather than let it rust away to nothing.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Bump. Warners in mt. sterling has a lot of old stuff. Mostly automotive.

Starks in south Dayton is a neat place also. Anything else in ohio region worth checking out?

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Rice Paddy motorcycles in Columbus was the best. Some real estate developer bought the land for 1.1 mil 3 years ago (the junkyard owner had bought it for like $95k) and it's just been sitting vacant ever since. They had a few MB5's kicking around before they closed up shop. I wrecked my CB550 (hit a stopped car doing ~20 mph) and it cost me $15 to fix it with parts from Rice Paddy. They mostly had old UJM's but a couple speed triples and stuff too. They just straight up gave me some Mikuni's I dug up out of some old Yamaha dirt bikes that were buried on their last day of business

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Damn I didn't know they closed down.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

The place i remember best is Landry's in Windham NH

It's no longer a junkyard/bike shop but it has a cool little history to it i guess;

Screenshot_20200320-074123_SamsungInternet.jpg

On the right was where the Landry's lived, the garage in the middle was repairs for road&dirt bikes and snowmobiles, getting gas, etc and then all the way over on the left was a hanger FULL of old bikes stacked high.

The old trails to the sand pits led up to the back of the property so you could ride right up for gas and be back on the trails in minutes.

What you can't see in the picture is behind the flats, and back in the trees, is a super steep hill that was cleared years ago for skiing and a rope lift.

So you could ski, get your snowmobile or dirt bike fixed and get gas all in one place.

Now the land around it has been developed into neighborhoods and all the old trails are gone, cut off, or converted to walking trails.

It was a cool little place.

Sometimes I really miss the nnati. I wanna go across the river to the Hofbrauhaus :-(

I dont know of any. I got lucky a few years back and found a puch murray in a pull and pay. They wouldnt let me buy it whole but i bought the motor / wheels.

Damn I didn't know they closed down.

Me neither. I was there a few years back and they were selling off alot of their junkers outside but i thought they were just refocusing their attention on cafes.

Isnt hofbrauhaus a chain? Been meaning to eat there for years just hasnt happened yet.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

Used to be a big warehouse here in maine that had a ton of shit. Alot of old two stroke bikes and lots of vintage Japanese stuff. I heard that they sold most of the parts back to japan and chine so they could reproduce parts. Aka clone shit

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

It has become more of a chain, was less of one over 15 years ago when i went more frequently. Hofbrau then across the purple people bridge to Oktoberfest. Still delicious bier and wurst I’d assume. And hopefully when I swing thru next, Shake it records will still be in business, great vinyl selection .

spook's motorcycle grave yard on post town rd. sits on top of the highest point of Montgomery Co. spook died when i was a teenager, and his son beanie runs the place now. they keep most of their good shit in 100 school busses. i spoke with him 10 yrs ago about mopeds. He told me they had a semi trailer full, and sold the bikes and trailer as a lot to some guy in dayton. i've always wondered if the trailer, and bikes that terry bought yrs ago were one in the same....he's been selling parts on b/s as long as i've been here. spook's AKA spencer's was a source for puch ltd turn signals until i bought them all.

Re: Skips Junk Yard - Cincinnati Ohio

And our parents had NO IDEA where we were either, just as long as you were home for dinner no questions were asked.
