ever have that one tool...

that you always seem to lose?

unfortunately for me, all my snap ring pliers seem to grow legs when i need them most. i've seriously bought about 5 pairs in the past year, and they always get LOST!!! i've thrown my entire garage and can't find them. i'm starting to wonder if one of my wrenching buddies may be an incognito tool theif... hopefully i'm wrong.

for me its the electrical tape. i can never find any when i need it. one time i cleaned out the garage and found like 6 rolls of the stuff. then i didn't need any for a few months, then whattya know, no tape anywhere. this problem always has me stumped.

Re: ever have that one tool...

It's needle nose pliers for me. I have several pair and I can never find one when I need it.. No thiefs over here. I just don't know how to put my own tools back. :)

Any tool I need at the moment. I think I spend more time looking for tools than I do actually doing work.

Re: ever have that one tool...

i lost my 10 nut driver outta my bag whilst riding and that's a brutal slam

Re: ever have that one tool...

My metric allen keys. Sometimes my rubber mallet too. Though my caliper will walk off for weeks at a time.

Re: ever have that one tool...

i've lost micrometers while i was trying to do some timing. i didnt even need the micrometer. i lose things i don't need until i find them and figure out a better solution.

Re: ever have that one tool...

you get fucked up and leave your shit at my crib. I oddly enough have plenty of snap-ring pliers.

Re: ever have that one tool...

I always put my tools back when I am done. It was a habit I learned by necessity from all the years of using my dad's tools. Organize for life!

Re: ever have that one tool...

but yeah, I usually pick the wrong size socket 2 or 3 times before I finally figure out which one I need. Sometimes it's still on the socket wrench I used last :-p

Re: ever have that one tool...

my damn flip-around screwdriver that fits in the spark plug socket and doubles as the handle that i found in an old kawasaki dirtbike tool kit.

it was the best tool ever until someone stole it last summer

otherwise i'm pretty picky about keeping my tools organized.

pro tip: get a small rubbermaid tote thing, like 5" x 8" x 5" and put all the tools in it, when you dont have a chance to take them back to the tool box. that way they never get mixed in with project junk or buckets of parts. its easier to organize the tool box all at once, and when you do, you can see right away what tools are missing from the complete set.

also i have good expensive tools in a complete set that i always make sure is together. buying harbor freight shit one at a time and keeping it in a pile is a recepie for disaster.

The problem isn't that I lose one tool consistantly, it is that I usually find a bowl before I start looking for my tools. Hahaha
