vanagon trip disaster

So the trip out west was awesome, the van ran great and we made it in four days. We enjoyed Samish island (WA) for a few weeks camped on the penensula, visited family in OR.

The ride back- the vanagon nearly died coming through Idaho, it couldn't go any farther than Salt Lake City. I rented a car to get my family out of the god forsaken desert and have shipping arrangements to get the vanagon home. I did this rather than fix the vanagon on the spot because I had my wife and two kids with me.

The problem is that the rental car was expensive and shipping the van will be $900. I may be able to borrow a truck and rent a tailor to go get it myself.

I love my van and it will get home.

I need to raise funds to get my vanagon home whether it is shipped or I drive to pick it up.

If you know of any one that is headed to St.Louis from Salt Lake City and will haul it for a cheaper price let me know.

If you want to donate money because you understand the bond that a young man and his VW share then send money via paypal to declangardner@sbcglobal.net

Re: vanagon trip disaster

Dude, total buzkill! What failed on it?

Re: vanagon trip disaster

I understand the bond between between a young man and his VW. I had troubling relationships in my twenties with VWs too. I got a little older and realized that VWs made after 1984 are shit.

So if you are ready to break that bond then do it. Don't let that Van ruin your life. Remember the good days, then buy a car made from ANY other manufacturer.

Re: vanagon trip disaster

I do soooo know the bond a man and Vanagon share, mine were with Baywindow Westfailias, but I know, god help my wallet do I know. If you know what went wrong would it make sensce to ship youreslf and your tools there to repair and drive her home? What is her name? (all busses have a name) I will pray for her, and you! If I have any left next paycheck I will donate....I live pretty hand to mouth, but I soooo get it! Glad your family got home ok, at least your prioritys are in line. How secure is the bus stored? God this hurts me....(true VW guy at heart). These are the most recalcitrant vehicles ever produced, with the notable exceptions of Fiats, and MG's...but they are no where as cool! I drove a 1970 baywindow westy home to MN from Sandieago, at about 56 mph top speed, stoped 1.5 miles from my house for some pop, it refused to start! Removed cap, rotor was burnt to hell, as was cap....that van gave her all for me. Her name was Rachael! She live on yet! I know the guy I sold her to 2 yrs later. He lives with her in Texas. This was in the late 80's! My only Vanagon was an '80 model, still air cooled it disapeared into a shop that went belly up and disappeared. :( Best of luck! Get her back!

Re: vanagon trip disaster

Traitor! (jk) but really they are hard to give up, I still want another, just can't afford one, not to buy one, but the maint....

Re: vanagon trip disaster

My vanagon is a 80' aircooled model and I also have a 1973 MG roadster (great minds think alike? or seek punishment?).

I will hopefully go get it myself, wich will still cost money and rely on borrowing a tow vehicle. I could ship myself and fix it but if it is the head it is a big job to do in the blazing sun of Utah and I have a sneaking suspicion a lifter has been mushroomed out and has also caused damage to the cam which meens total rebuild time (been 7-9 years since the last rebuild so this is not out of order). This van has too many good memories to ditch her and the maintenence is nothing when you do it yourself, especially in comparison to a car payment.

Also it is full of my families personal belongings since it could not be packed into the compact rental car. The cost to replace belongings and get a new ride would total more than bringinging her home (I just refer to her as "girl" or sometimes "ol' girl"

Jimbo Grand Daddy /

What's the possibility of finding a used engine?

Re: vanagon trip disaster

Normally not to hard to find a decent type4 engine, thats not really the biggest problem just yet. Right now I need to get it back to my garage.

Re: vanagon trip disaster

I was just wondering about you, and your trip. So... what did ya do; roll it?

Re: vanagon trip disaster

There's this old 50's one a few tiny towns away from me. Had to snap a shot of it, so I finally did a couple days ago.

Re: vanagon trip disaster

that one looks so lonely

Re: vanagon trip disaster

It kinda looks peacfull.

Re: vanagon trip disaster

oh man, i want that vacuum panel bus

Re: vanagon trip disaster

Someone should snag that, those are nice. I found a 60' 15 window deluxe in a field a few years back and bought it for $100. My dad got it and he is restoring it "for my mom".

Re: vanagon trip disaster

Have you ever dealt with a guy that just smiles and asks how deep your pockets are? That's who owns this. he has no idea what he really has, but he acts like it's a gold mine anyway.

I have been trying to _snag_ that bus for over a dozen years now. the only good thing about it, is it's out of view. It'll sit and sit unless someone stumbles across it that has dollars falling outa their pants.

Yep, I have wanted that panel for so long I feel like it's sorta mine in a way anyway. I know where it's at. I can look but not touch. It'll sit there and sit until the guy lets me take it away. Too bad the tail lights are missing. I still don't think I've EVER seen a REAL set of actual original round glass tail lights. Always re-pros. My 60 bus had them, but not when I got it. I tossed in some cheapy plastic ones that are slightly larger and without the chrome.

Here's mine...

Re: vanagon trip disaster

sounds like you had a better trip than i did with my mini coachman toyota shitbox

my florida trip didnt work out all that well

Re: vanagon trip disaster

The trip was great, the trip home sucked but probably better than the whole trip being spoiled had it broke down on the way out.

Re: vanagon trip disaster

man... okay, so order your parts, jump on your ped and ride down to rescue it!

PERHAPS THIS MAY BE OF SOME HELP GETTIN IT HOME

AIRS....I think I posted this befor you left for your trip but here it is again

Re: PERHAPS THIS MAY BE OF SOME HELP GETTIN IT HOME

I will search through the AIRS website, the only problem is people on there don't update their info. Every number I called in ID and UT was disconnected. Thanks for the ideas.

Re: vanagon trip disaster

Damn, a pannel van! those are very rare, go get it!

Re: vanagon trip disaster

I' am going with "seek punishment" I wish I could afford another Vanagon, loved the vehicle, they are disapearing fast in MN...rust never sleeps! Have you seen the Tico engine kit? Super spendy but then the reliability issue is solved for good, would not work for you as you have air cooled. Best of luck!

Heres my 1974 VW Bus!

I need a few parts for mine, Email me at nmklop96@yahoo.com If you could help! I love my bus! Traded my 1984 Puch Maxi Sport LS for it!
