headlight bulbs for older mobys?

Hi all,

I'm having a hard time finding a source for clear spare bulbs for my 1965 AV42 Mobylette. She needs the screw in type (see photo) 6w-6v. I've set up Google Alerts in French and English for a variety of phrasing but to no avail.

Or maybe you have any recommendations for fitting her with a better bulb or set-up, that would work too. It would be great to have a small halogen but I'm worried about melting the plastic housing. I've already converted the taillight to a small LED board inside the original housing. So I'm assuming she could have slightly more wattage in her headlight than before.

Cheers and thanks,

Tracy

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

First off, HOT bike! Depending on the diameter of the housing maybe a 6v sealed beam like on 50v? You would have to swap out the screw in socket, and fab a connection. Or perhaps just swap on a 50v or 40 headlight bucket? That would spoil the look of the bike a bit, but would make you legal. Maybe you could wire in a modern headlight capsule behind the glass of your current light? They are 12v for the most part, but it may light enough to be legal? Some older garden tractors had those type of bulbs if I remember right, if there is a part # on the bulb take it to Sears and see if they have a match, I have gotten 6v sealed beam bulbs there before. Best of luck!

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

Oh, do both those bulbs, yellow and clear reside in the bucket? Or is the yellow an option? That would look really cool.

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

Get a GE787 halogen bulb - they are 10 watt 6 volt very bright. You will need to make a socket for the bulb, it has a G4 base instead of a screw base. Or you can use a MR11 Halogen bulb but you will still need to fabricate a holder but the MR11 comes in all sorts of colours and beam configurations because the reflector is built in. http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page/001/CTGY/MR-11

Keep in mind the halogen bulbs get HOT so if you adapt your light to one you need to make a metal trim ring to support the bulb and holder and not plastic.

For some reason I could not get onto 1977Mopeds before supper - anyhow they list the OEM yellow bulb from Bob Jones' NOS parts for Mobys

and the OEM rear bulb

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

I have this in my moby right now. Its super bright and hasnt blown yet. I kept blowing the regular bulbs and they were dim so I decided to take a chance with this type....paid off, cause now I have working lights. Took about 3 weeks to get here but I cant complain

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

Thanks everybody. Some good advice. I wish I liked yellow headlights but I just want white. I especially like the white led suggestion. I have had great luck with the leds in all of my two wheelers. But I've never had an LED headlight.

Cheers,

Tracy

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

Go to the hardware store and look at some of the replacement bulbs for the old school flashlights that take the square 6 volt batteries. They are clear bulb - 6 volt - and heavy duty cause the old type of camp flashlights would get a beating lots of times.

Re: headlight bulbs for older mobys?

Hi all,

I thought I would post back. I ordered the LED bulb "orange citrus" recommended and it works great. I took a photo of two different headlights plus the LED taillight I made. The top photo shows this bulb:

The middle photo shows my LED tail light - I bought an LED indicator light from an autoparts store and gutted it and trimmed it to fit the pretty art deco taillight.

The third picture is a regular bulb in the headlight. It seems brighter but is a bigger pull on the engine. When (and if) it ever starts warming up in the evening, I'll take her for a test ride with one headlight bulb then the other to see what works best.
