Hesitant shifting on jawa 2-speed

Jamie Leonard /

I just got a jawa (1987) 2-speed as a project bike (am learning more about maintaining and the mechanics of mopeds and wanted something cheaper than my tomos to practice on!) - the thing runs, but the shifting is hesitant (requires playing with the throttle to get it going.

This thing (according to the shop manual which I have with it) has a flywheel dry clutch - just wondering if anyone had some general hints about the first/best things to try to get the shifting working a bit better before I start tearing things apart? Even some general pointers from the more experienced mechanically would be handy :)

(am more used to tearing apart computers into bits than mopeds, but am getting there! :)

Re: Hesitant shifting on jawa 2-speed

try taking the clutch apart and cleaning it. its probably dirty as hell.

Thanks! Sounds like a good idea.. any general recommendations on the best way to clean it?

yes take out the screw(s) holding the clutch(s) on and take the whole thing apart. then take brake clean, carb clean or degreaser and let em soak. after that take a tooth brush the the clutch pads. then asssemble. post back.

Thanks yet again! Will give that a go in a day or two (am busy cleaning the muffler out and tightening up everything on the machine) It tends to konk out at a lower idle a bit but I'm pretty sure I just need to clean out the exhaust, clean out the carb, maybe yank the petcock and give that a good going over as well. Definitely has some oomph in first gear (Are all jawas decent performance? Am almost wondering if someone did some 'tinkering' to get some more speed on this thing!)
