If you Don't have the title Chances are you won't get one. Ride it dirty.
Ben, I now have paperwork to apply for a title when you don't have one. All you do is have a cop look at the bike to make sure the vin numbers are legit and then give write a history about the bike (where you got it,why there is no paperwork, etc.) and provide a bill of sale from the person you bought it from and BAM. New title.
Yeah, only problem there is you have to talk to a cop.
I am really really bad with police. Not to mention like phobically terrified.
hah, yeah...I guess that would be a problem. As long as you check to make sure the bike isn't stolen before-hand though, you are fine. There is nothing the cop can do though, he is literally just checking the vin numbers and signing a piece of paper for you.
I think between Salty and I we've emailed enough folks the paperwork for a lost title. It's pretty damn simple. Riding dirty is retarded.
Is it the same paperwork I have....where you attach a history of the bike, bill of sale, and have an officer check the vin numbers?
What has your experience been with the whole process? I haven't tried it yet as I just found the paperwork fairly recently.
I'm thinking about doing the visit a cop way, only problem I see is that they have to check the numbers on the frame AND engine. 1) are there even two numbers on the engine on an e50 like it says you need? Or is that just for the frame? And 2) what if the engine and frame are not originally from the same bike? I have a magnum and the engine is from a free spirit, will that screw anything up?
you forgot the part where you need a bond in escrow 1.5x the blue book value :( thats the part about that lost title form that sucks.
You can get bonds from your insurance company for like $100.
Otherwise you can go through good 'ol ITS. It's $250 now though which is absurd.
You need matching numbers.
Bond in escrow, wtf are you talking about. Fill out your paperwork correctly and mail it all in with a check. If you're unsure about your paperwork, take it to the local DMV office to ensure it's correct. Wait it out and you'll get plates/sticker/title/registration (not likely all together). The method I just told you works. Why on earth would you need a bond worth 1.5 times the value of the bike. Bill of sale, taxes on amount bike purchased for will show up in your MV1 form.
KBB is a fucking joke. NADA or Glaves is more accurate, but how the hell cvan you judge a fucking mopeds worth. Is this for insurance purposes now...
He was talking about a different but similar method. You go in to the dmv, have them research the vin and find the last known registered owner and make sure it isn't stolen, have the dmv contact them, and if they don't get back to you within (I think) 15 days you can get a bonded title.
yeah. sorry guys. thats what the dmv lady from madison told me on the phone (about the whole escrow bond thing). there is a different way? please tell me, because ive just been riding dirty.
I just did.
@dohmer. did you just fill out MV1, fill out the improper documentation form (that you posted in 2 parts), get the police thing signed, and turn it in w/ a check and bill of sale? How long did it take?
6 weeks, I was told 4 to 10. After all is said and done... ~$100 cheaper than your previous route.
6 weeks? I got mine in 2 weeks. and no escrow mumbo jumbo for me. -what? I did actually buy the bike for $10 haha.
NO BOND NEEDED! READ THE EFFING PAPER. Send it as required per the paperwork, you will get a title. People keep telling me it doesn't work but have never tried it themselves. I have done it about 15 times now on cycles and mopeds. Its legit and 100% legal. Not hard to do, less expensive than registering at the DMV, takes a few weeks and you have a title in your name. Lets all get our stuff legal. Registering your ped will cost less than your 1st ticket not to mention getting it impounded.
yeah, with the new fee structure (effective 2008 i think) its a lot cheaper to go this way than any other mumbojumbo
ty guys.. ihave the mv1 form and just need to send it in.. oh yeah i dont'have a bill of sale.. it was actually given to me.. so what do i do? it ight be on the mv1.. but i just got it and didn't have tie to fill it out or even read the thing.
Write an anonymous BOS and have a friend sign that name. Say you bought it at a car show, yard sale or some shit
i dont think they give tickets in madison.. i dont know. ask chris about it.
just double checking because i havent actually done it yet.. the engine and frame number NEED to be the same number?? because ive never seen a moped that has the same number on the engine and frame.. am i the only one who thinks this is kind of a problem?
Your Puch will have the engines serial number on the I'd plate. If your shit don't match, use a punch set and put some matching numbers on your shit then.
The paperwork says matching numbers and we've said x1000's now in this forum.
actually, it doesnt say MATCHING anywhere on the paperwork, thats why i wasnt totally sure. but thanks, sorry im just dumb.
no, no, no you are all good man. I had mis-matching vin numbers on the ped I had titled too. the cop who checked my bike ran both vin numbers(to see if the ped had been reported stolen) and then I explained in the "written section," as part of the paper work I mailed into the DMV that I took an engine from another ped and put it on my current driver. cause thats what I do, I fix old vintage mopeds and have lots of parts laying around... right? so yeah no worries. honesty is the best policy, and by honesty I mean give it a perspective. good luck!
