3 speed gearbox

I wonder if anyone has thought about adding more gears to a transmission. We are all interested in gaining power throughout the entire speed range.

My Tomos has a two speed automatic tranny. Is there a possibility that this tranny could be adjusted to a three speed? Think about it...someone somewhere told me that adding a gear to the tranny is common practice in Europe, so why not here. Believe me I have looked and looked and asked everywhere but the answer from my limited sources is always I dunno.

After a long ride last night, I came here this morning to ask the same question.

I really hope so, but if it is not possible, how difficult would it be to change

the gearing of the two speeds ???

Very.

Have you actually cracked the case and looked in there ?

Where would you put it ? - the whole thing is designed around that doublewheeled clutch assembly, and you'd need a machine shop and a miracle to modify that mess of things from stock.

Tell me if you do have any ideas tho.

Ideas I have plenty of, it's the smarts to back them up that I'm lacking. Is it so

cramped in there that changing the internal gear ratio's would be out of the

question ?

Re: 3 speed gearbox Ideas...

What I have heard on this is that in Europe, people actually do this change as a matter of fact. It may be as simple as getting the right web page that sells parts or perhaps the whole tranny with three speeds.

The problem comes in not with installing the thing but with locating the source. As I have been tokl these parts are available but in Europe. Lets say it is expensive ok so it is expensive, but I happen to like my ped and perhaps I would consider this upgrade if I could locate the source.

Re: 3 speed gearbox Ideas...

keep one thing in mind. the brakes and frame on your moped were designed to go 30mph. they can probably tolerate the stress of going 40. and that's a long stretched out maybe. i don't think any mopeds were engineered to be safe (or even to hold together) at much higher speeds. at the very least, you will most likely exceed you brake's tolerance levels.

if you really want to go that fast, you should just get a motorcylce. part of the enjoyment of the moped is being able to ride a bit slower than most cars and relax. i love the fact that i can very easily stop to talk to people. every ride allows me to enjoy the scenery, not worry about whether or not my brakes will hold up.

I respectfully disagree.

I ride my Tomos at 40+ most of the time, and everything seems to be holding

together fine, although I do expect premature brake wear.

I think it is even more fun, being able to pass a car when you want to. Nothing

tells somebody they are driving too slow, quite as much as being passed on the

highway by a moped. The looks of astonishment are worth every penny I've put

into my bike. This isn't to say I don't also enjoy the leisurely rides as well. Your

comment about being able to stop and say "hi" is well taken. I put about 50 miles

on my bike last weekend, and during the course of the day ran into (not literally)

three old friends during the day. One took the bike for a quick spin, and now I'll

be taking him to where I got mine this weekend.

Going slow is great, going fast is just a little better :-)
