so i bought a 74 puch s-maxi today and the E50 on this is not like others I have seen... is it just a different head they used that year? is it a different HP how many HP does these have? i tried finding another E50 engine that looks like this and i cant. so any help or info would be awesome! thanks

its just the original e50. no clutch cover to it, so you have to bust the case open to work on the clutch.
very rare engine in the states. thats an original E50, first style case and cylinder/head. the whole engine is different. although im pretty sure that by 1974 they had changed the engine to the modern style. the only years ive seen this engine on were like 1969-71 maxis...are you sure its a 1974? does the engine number match the frame number? i always wanted one of these original E50s.

i was about to comment on it being on a 74...cause i think that was too late for them...as a-ko said. i had a 74 maxi s and it had the e50 that we know on it. you either have an earlier ped or maybe someone did an engine transplant?

Im gunna try to post some pics staight in here so bare with me if it doesn't work. the #'s match but the guy didnt know anything about mopeds (it was his dads) and it did have a title so i hoping you guy will be able to help me with what year it really is cause that will help at the DMV

It's an original E50. It has the same internals as a normal E50, but no clutch cover. You need to split the cases to work on the clutch, this makes these engines not really suitable for tuning.
Nice engine tho, even overhere they are a bit rare. Not so sought after tho, only by people who want to restore their old Maxi to original.
Maybe ill have to try to trade this to some one lookin to do that cause im going modify this ped a lot. how do i tell how many ponys this has? thanks
I have one and I did a post like this when I found it. its going to be one of my engine projects this winter. nice find and dont let people tell you that e50s dont have a decomp valve
i would guess 1hp since the newer maxis are 1-2 so older teck = slower...
or it could be like moby's which had 45-50 mph mopeds before mopeds where regulated
no way jose, that E50 right there could be as many as 2.5HP...

well i cleaned the carb and found out it has a 14mm bing on it stock, the compression is great, great spark, but the tank is all rusty and it needs a new plug (it so lawn mower plug in it) which plug does This take? but it has eather the worlds simplest wiring or its missing stuff.but dont know cause i havent tride to run it and also how do i shut it off if there is no on/off switch? choke it dead?

I have a 71 maxi s (euro import) that has one of those (no de-comp); the whole bike is going to a friends girl with a ported stock top-end, pre-tuned clutch, hc head, 15 carb/intake, and de-restricted stock pipe. I figured she'll never want to tune or mod it and she'll take good care of it. So it's a good use for that engine.
The headlight and tail light are really the only parts I'll regret letting go..
No year on the vin plate an half of it isn't english. anybody have a close up of one of these engines set up to run. cause that would be amazing, kind of need it like a blue print. or know any ware to find a manual?

One OWNERS WORKSHOP MANUAL that you might want to find is the Haynes 107 Puch Maxi Mopeds All models.1969 to 1980. The ISBN number is 0 85696 582 0.The Puch maxi S is listed as being made from 1971 to 1977, but with that engine it looks like it may have been made before 1976.BHP 2.2 AT 4,500 rpm.Spark plug Bosch W 145 T1 or Champion L-10.One wire diagram shows YELLOW as lights and GREY as Tail lamp.If you have BLUE, that is ignition in most cases. BLACK/YELLOW is headlight and speedometer bulb in most cases.BLUE/GREEN should be brake light in most cases.Let me know if you need more wire colours to be found out to what they are for and/or any other questions.

Some have the low and high tension coil built together. This engine has a decompressor.
what is the decompressor and what does it do?

The decompressor is used to remove some compression to make the engine easy to start. Maxi mopeds were marketed for girls to start with, so they must have wanted it to be easy for them to start. I think once everyone liked it , they did away with it and they are still easy to start. The engines that had them may had more compression, but i need to check the manual to be sure. I have too much to do between now and Thankgiving to scan anything.
I have that U.K. Haynes Puch Maxi '69 on manual too. Unfortunately there are no VIN/year-made numbers listed. My manual was published in '73. The Maxi S was first introduced (U.K. that is) in "71. 2.2hp with a compression ratio of 11:1 It says the cylinder was chromium plated and cannot be rebored. The wiring diagram shows only the plug wire and one yellow wire coming from the stator. You should have a 68 jet with the 14mm Bing. I just checked ebay UK and there's none listed, keep checking, there's uaually at least one listed.
thats my engine to a "T" other then mine has a 70 jet in it.

its smoked like a bitch for awhile then com downed but god knows the last time it was ran, the guy i got it from said a year or so but who really knows. took forever to get it to sart but once it did i could kill it hen fire it right back up!
