moped security

i go to college at the university of minnesota and just bought a '79 Vespa Bravo in almost mint condition. What should I do with the security issue? Locks, trackers, alarms? Does anybody have an alarm on their moped? What is a good site to get one at?

Re: moped security

see ree for the info on alarms and other crazyness ...

but the minimum standard is a kryptonite u-lock. always lock to something solid. at worst (for short runs to the store), lock through your back wheel and frame so that it can't be rolled away. keep it indoors if possible over night (garage, shed). some people keep theirs in their living room.

btw, i'm very jealous of any mint condition vespa bravo .... wow!

I just lock my moped up to whatever object is close to where my class is. My university is a pain in the butt to moped in because you have to go past these parking toll booth things on the way in. If you're lucky they will let a moped in. Mopeding around campus is a lot of fun but you tend to get pulled over by campus security, especially if they can hear you from anywhere on the campus.

Re: moped security

there must be ways into campus besides the toll booths ... sidewalks? smooth grass? how do the bicycles do it? follow their example ...

if you sport a friendly but tough as nails attitude on your ped, you can get some respect. that's my experience, at least.

oh yeah, i found several places.

even got through a toll booth today, i just told the guy with the engine off it's the same as a bicycle

(that might be false, maybe if it's plated it's considered a motor vehicle)

Bunch of sneaky Brits, but good at it, this is more complex stuff.

Model # TT7K is a personal Fav, $40.00 worth of real security.

Hope this helps a bit.

Page three also has a handy thing fer keepin hands OFF yer 'ped.

I use Model # Charge1K myself, but it's a bit, umm..extreme for campus use.

Alarms are prettymuch ignored in this day and age of car alarms, tracking devices are much handier, most moped thieves don't go far....and as for preventing vandalism one of those zappers does a nice job of keeping hands off.

(Pity the doggie that lifted a leg on my ped a couple nights ago, but then, that's why they have leash laws..)

You shouldn't use common chain, it's just too easy to bust, I reccommend heavy aircraft or elevator cable (home depot has it !) and a pin-across lock, which looks like this.

But on-campus the most effective defense of yer wheels is an "example" or two of what happens to folks who mess with your moped...a little of that will go a long way.
