Just really want to share

Well first and foremost i would like to thank Ajwasp for all his help and the manuals he provided me during this restoration.

But here is the story, i bought this 1979 Columbia Open Road (badged as commuter) in pretty rough shape. Not running, rusty, and most of the cabling was not done.

It has been a long process but definitely worth it.

Before she was a rickety old rust bucket

Then i cleaned her up a bit, and fixed the running issue

And now it's good as new! solid, running, and stopping, well

Nice job, and your welcome. I'm always glad to help out the Columbia Open Road owners. My Columbia is running so good right now, it's been faster than most on our Uphill Battle rides. I'm working on performance mods right now, pics and details to come. Funny thing is, I just dragged out my spare frame this morning and wondered what color to paint it. Contrary to popular belief, the Open Road is a pretty good bike. Once you get it figured out, it's very reliable. If so inclined, put a Puch rear wheel on it. The Puch wheel had 45 teeth as opposed to the stock 57 teeth, and has way better braking. I'm now working on better braking for the front. I've always wanted to start a post, "Show me your Open Road Pics", but was afraid they're wouldn't be any. Keep me up to date on your work, again, nice job, Harvey

custom fabricating side covers as we speak. papa gino's dough boxes are very useful!

Re: Just really want to share

yeah, i got to ride harvey's on an uphill battle ride on my visit to stump-town. nice-riding bike, actually. quick lil' fucker.

shit for brakes, but who wants something that's gonna slow them down, anyway?

Re: Just really want to share

I had one of those a long time ago! It was a screamer compared to most other peds of the day.

By the way, I have NOS decals for that bike.........I think ??

Re: Just really want to share

nice work dude.

Re: Just really want to share

Great work! I have the Sachs version and am putting Tomos side covers on it, they will need to be cut a little to clear the mag cover but it will look pretty good I think. I like that tube frame your bike has, I remember seeing a really cool custom made from one.

Re: Just really want to share

Great job. You should flip the handlebars and make it all racer-like :)

Oddly enough wiffleball, i actually used to have a tomos sprint (stolen) and also currently have a sachs commuter. do you need side covers? cause i have them, but we may need to change forums to do the deal!

@retrochick, i tried it, they actually are cafe bars, but the high seat and not top-tank-ness made it horrible uncomfortable. i will have a cafe racer some day though!

@ike i want dem decals!

Re: Just really want to share

i hate how those engines look, but in the "after" pics the bike looks so nice i dont even notice! nice work.
