Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

Hi all,

I picked up my very first moped last week and I'm having some trouble identifying what year and model it is. (see photo). It was sold as a 1957 but I think it may be more of a early 60s model. I'm pretty sure it's an AV-42 but alas someone took the VIN Plate off. And my French isn't good enough for the Motobecane Club site. ; ) I did find these numbers near the back wheel:

Frame # 42160530

Engine # 50008310

Of course I'm not sure if these are definitive ID numbers but they might narrow the search.

I'm also looking for a manual (in English) too.

Thanks for any help!

(I know, I know but even my mechanic Jesse of Puddle Cutters isn't sure what to make of it!)

Downhill Harvey (OFMC) /

Nice, can't wait to see it around town.

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

I thought AV42's went from 63 to 67.

The solid bicycle forks are the tip off for AV42's...

Use Babelfish to translate the French site...

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

My guess is that its early 1960's au42 or av42. There is a date on the carburetor that should date the bike fairly close.

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

doesn't look like you need anything at the moment, but somebody's parting one of these out on ebay right now. those motor's are pretty rare, it may be worth picking an extra up for parts....

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

The engine number must be a 7 digit. Witch one is wrong? I can tell you the year with the real engine number.

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

Hey everybody,

Thanks for all your help. I think this may be a 1965. Once I get it back I'll check the numbers again - I don't think those numbers at the rear wheel are the "real" numbers but without the VIN plate it's about all I have.

Thanks!

Tracy

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

that is awesome

im not much of a moby guy but i love those old ones

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

My sister used to have one just like this one. It was a little stiffer but just as fast. La Grise( the Grey one). I think the caddys took it's looks from this model. Straight fork ,head lite. Nice Mobylette.

I rode many miles on it, my mother had an 67 Grise with front telescopic fork, and long rectangular head lite bucket, more comfortable but a little more costly.

The numbers on the carb are BA 610C.4/64 I'll check on those ebay parts.

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

Im so glad someone on here got that.I offered them $400 for it,lol. Its the one from Gig harbor right?

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

Yup. It's the one from Gig Harbor. I gave him his asking price.

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

Since the carburetor date is 1964 the bike is going to be fairly close to that. I'd say its safe to assume its a 1964 model.

Re: Need help identifying AV-42? Mobylette

Found this list with motor numbers on a dutch website...The guy claims that these are better for dating than the frame numbers. It would imply that yours is a late 65' model.

1960 2.342.141

1961 2.745.137

1962 3.219.675

1963 3.783.995

1964 4.305.913

1965 4.850.920

1966 5.483.428

1967 6.147.738

1968 6.727.640

1969 7.303.321

1970 7.894.214

1971 8.499.265
