black piston

I know its normal for the top of the piston to be black from burning mixture but is it normal for the sides to be black?

If the black extends beyond the rings, it is called blow-by, and it is caused by bad seating in the rings.

But its still fairly normal .. almost all of them have SOME of it.

.. if you have a whole lot of it .. (like halfway down the piston .. and thick looking) .. you could probably use new rings .. (and maybe a hone job to go with them)

Looks like too much, to me. Time for new rings and a cylinder hone, at least.
