Bent Rim

Ataristyle /

With the past few days being nice out I have taken my moped on the unsalty roads here in Chicago. I goto school during the day and when thats over I go straight to work. I dont get off untill its dark outside. Tonight when I was riding ,which was a little before 10pm, I hit a huge pothole. I was going in the lower 30s. I didnt swurve to the left because I didnt know if there was a vehicle on the side of me and because I thought if I did it would be too late since I saw the pothole at the last second. Its hard to see when driving at night. All i could do when I hit it was tense up for the impact. I hit it and had complete control of my bike. I felt a little wabbling to the bike afterwards but was going to drive it home and look what happened to it. I had made a bent in the rear and front wheel that is about 3 1/2 inches. The bends only accure on the right sides of the wheels. It still drives fine, with the exception to a tiny bit of shake. Also, on the rear wheel there is a crack on the rim that is in the inner part where the support piece(not spoke) comes to the middle of the rim. The wheels are aluminum I believe. My moped is a '98 Tomos Targa LX. Should I attempt to get a hammer to bang the dents in? Will the crack be a big problem(Not cracked all the way through)? Also how much does a front and rear Mag wheel run for? Prices for them are not posted at mopedjunkyard.com

Re: Bent Rim

Cracked wheels can be a problem, might pinch your tube and cause a flat. Depending on how bad the dents are they could cause you to loose some control in a turn when you need it. If at all possible I

For the bent rim, remove the tire and try to use blocks of wood and a large bench vise to press it back into shape. You do not need to ose blocks which are shaped to fit the wheel, just try to suppert it where it is ok and apply pressure to the center of the kink. Go slowly, if the wheel cracks, replace it.

For the cracked rim, if it is still true, check it regularly and either replace it or have it welded if it spreads.

For future pot holes, if you can think of it and react in time, stand on the pedals with your knees bent and try to tug up on the handlebars as if you were climbing a kerb.

You can use Puch wheels on a Tomos, probably some others too.

Just be careful if yer mountin 17's, cause Tomos is 16's, and they might rub if you do not make alterations to prevent it.

I'm going to see if I can get the rim formed back to original form tonight. When I did hit the pothole I got up off the seat, stood on the pegs(since this is a pegged version Tomos) and pulled up on the handle bars so I wouldn't go head over heels. Will older wheels from Tomos's w/ spokes work as a perfect fit w/ out any alterations? For instance, the rear sprocket is the same on a '80 that is a '98.

Thanks for the help!

I've managed to pound back the bends on the rims w/ a rubber mallot. Bad news is that there is a tiny crack in the back rim. Holds air fine but I would like to replace them eventually. When I was done pounding on the front and back wheel at my work I was ready to leave. I got on the moped and was about to go but The handle bars were not straight when the wheel was. I stood in front of the 'ped and turned the handle bars until they were straight. I thought I was ready to leave until I was wondering why the light wasn't on. It turned out that when i was pounding away at the bike the filiment(took apart and confurmed) in the bulb for regular lighting was broken. No biggy, I'll just use the high beem. They turned on fine. Something else is now bothering me. On the guage box there is a green(turn signal) and blue(high beem) plastic piece that covers over the tiny bulbs. The blue piece must have gotten loose when I was pounding away at the bike. I've searched all over for it. I am going to try using the plastic part of a blue bingo chip for my new cover unless someone knows where to order a cover. I took pictures of the pothole and was going to try to get some money back for the damages. It turns out the road I was on is a state road and I wont get any money back :(

Here's the pics of the damage and the pothole

I posted the back rim but it never showed. I'll try posting it again later on tonight from home.
