Carburetor jet

I finally got around to checking the jet size on my 99 tfr. It has size 50 jet in it and i need to go lower. My question is though i was under the impression that a jet was a long screw not justa little short one. Is this correct, im sure it is but im just curious? Thanks.

Re: Carburetor jet

The main jet is the short one with the hole in the middle, then you have your low speed and high speed needles, if your bike even has them, some just have a main jet.

If you found this in the float bowl of the carburetor, scrwed up into the body, directly below the center of the slide, it is the main jet.

By the way, why do you need a smaller one?

Re: Carburetor jet

The reason i need to rejet is on a tfr in the air box is a plastic peace that limits the airflow so i cut holes in that, i built a less restrictive muffler, and i alos took out a small fuel filter right where the gas enters the carb(it was blocking gas from getting into the carb and also the screens where ripped outof it but still partly attached). I did all this when i first got the moped, It was probabaly not the best thing to do, but who cares when u buyn a moped for 10 bucks.

Now I remember, something about a lawn mower exhaust?

Go for it, but do a "plug chop" before and after to make sure you are not getting too lean.

Re: Carburetor jet

Haha yea thats right ron myt copper tubing going to a riding lawn mower replacement muffler. It seems to bee working better than the origninal muffler did loder, but better. Tomorrow i am going to buy a size 49 and 48 jet to replace the 50 i have in it right now. Does this seem right, i plan to try the 48 and do a plug test then if thats to lean im going to go with the 49? Thanks and ill keep u guys posted on how it comes along.

If you are sure it is rich right now and not because of air cleaner restriction, go for it. But I think if it is rich enough to be very noticeable, I would buy a 46 and 48.

Sorry bout all the mesages

First sorry bout all the messages. Now with the update, today i went and bought a new jet. I was gonna get a 49 but the guy didn't have anything under 51. So he said take a 51 home and try it even thought it was bigger than my 50 i had. I took it home installed it and it flooded the engine and dead stopped on me. So i walked it back up the street and I installed the 50 back in it and i also adjusted the idle screw. It started up adn ran good with no 4 cycling or boogging howevwer you say it. It did four cycle when i went down a large hill but that was about it. I thinK im still going to go with the size 49 jet just it try to see if i notice a power increse cause i do notice a decrese in torque since i reinstalled the size 50 jet. Thanks this forum has really been alot of help.
