Re: fixie?

Buckwheat, is that the boomerang kid from the road warrior? For those that are interested you can find the fixed gear owners manual here

Re: fixie?

Sure looks like the little shit doesn't it...Ahh, The days when Mel made good movies.

Sorry kids...mopeds are no fad. I can count all the ped riders in my city with the 20 digits mother nature gave me, which is far exceeded by the amount of stripped down Bianchi, Peugeot and Moby's (non motorized) within five minutes walking distance of my house and is undoubtably the same percentage wise in your fair city. It was the same with skate boards in my era...Now all that's left are the true enthusiasts and the old pros.

I give it four more years max...and then will follow something new and possibly more ridiculous.

bukwheat- i dont mean to pay you any disrespect but honestly your trippen.. how dare you speak negatively of stripped down mobys(non motorized) as that is what i have been riding for the majority of my stay in SF..

honestly on a skateboard you cant get around with much ease but lets face it(even my die hard skater friends will admit it)- if you live in the mission, hunterspoint, china basin, soma, south beach, and the list goes on of flat areas of SF- a converted road bike is a cheap means of conveys with minimal upkeep.. i dont really see how the numbers will go down- well perhaps the people that live in suburbs, but people in the city?! i dunno man, ive met countless people on trains, the bart, the buses etc.. that have told me they have been riding track, fixies bikes for many many years. did you not see my facts from above? there is a huge following.. yes there is hype now- and when that dies out the scene will still be very much alive. my brother had a torn ACL and used fixed gear as a means for rehabilitation- i know it almost sounds counter productive as people say skidding is high impact on the knees. but none the less his knee is much stronger then before his acl accident.

have you ever rode a fixed gear bike?! most likely not. its highly addictive. once you ride one you will never want a freewheel.. i use to have severe headaches and my medication was my fixed gear bike- the feeling of smashing and having to be thinking all the way a mile ahead was exactly what i needed... so please do not speak downward to not only one of my passions but damn near my way of life. some people choose different cars to drive day by day.. i choose my moped or my fixed gear, i dare you guys to come ride with me before you even say another condescending word.

dont get me wrong i hate seeing dudes look at me like im a poser cause i dont have a 2000 dollar actual track bike with horizontal drop outs.. i save my money for my pretty mopeds- so i ride my old stripped down moby. i guarentee you i got mad more bars then these dudes you sseeee around.. but none the less if someone picks up a new hobby and they enjoy it.. fuck it. i hope they do it to the best of there ability and i hope they do something productive with it, i refuse to be a condescending jerk....

fuck it, ima get a unicycle and see if it catchs on.

Re: fixie?

wow these fixies are super cool. i like the ability to do bmx tricks without the craped feeling of being on a kids bike.

Linda strikes again.

Re: fixie?

Dammit, now I want one. I used to do nothing but ride my old school 12 speeds around town. When I was a freshman (and even long after that) that was my main transport, even in winter from time to time. Sweet bars with the double brake handles and tiny seat and super skinny tires. Metal shift bars n all. I loved my one green one.

Shit, it was the same color as my van. I wish I still had it. Why ever did I get rid of it?

I need another old bike. Looks like I'll have to wait for spring to dig through people's trash again.

Re: fixie?

I'll pass on the no brakes thing!

Hey Saabsonettguy, lern to spel "brakes."

Re: fixie?

fuck fixed gears and fuck mopeds! they are both hella lame!

i seriously hate mopeds i mean god damnit! are you a fucking idiot? a piece of shit that breaks down every time i go riding and it always costs some dime to fix it up!? why the fuck don't i just buy a motorcycle? i must be mentally challenged. mopeds are just POS wanna be motorcycles that are reliable if you only keep em stock for the most part but who wants to go 30 miles per hour? fuck you gotta be stupid! so kit that shit, waste hella money, and seize it within the first month. rad! you are sooo cool now! i mean how unique and cool are you? all the money you are saving on gas you are spending on stupid parts that will break in another month or so. IDIOT!

and now fixed gears!? yeah it's the 1800's all over again. that shit got owned when some mo fo came up with gears! oh but that's right you don't want to coast because coasting is stupid. why relax your legs while you ride? why not just beat the fuck out of your body and wake up hella sore every morning. yeah walk up that hill with your bike you pussy! but it's soo effin cool to skid and ruin your tires isn't it? look at me skid and look at me do a 2 inch bunny hop! wtf? you think that actually looks cool? there is something called a bmx if you wanna do tricks, dumb ass! i mean seriously what the fuck? fuck mopeds and fuck fixed gears! they are both the most retarded things ever.

oh but wait. they are both hella fun, and kick ass hobbies. so stfu! if you don't like it go kill yourself because no one cares.

oh and one more thing. WHO THE FUCK ORDERS CAPPUCCINOS! I MEAN SERIOUSLY WTF! DOUCHEBAGS TO THE MAX! xoxoxoxxoxoxo

(seriously though. cappuccinos? god damn!)

Re: fixie?

"A true " Fixie" is very difficult to maintain speed on and knocks you out after a couple laps."

Nah, that's inaccurate. It's no more difficult to ride than a bike with a freewheel, just different. Some argue that it's more efficient, even, and I'm one of those. I ride both (track and road), and find that even on the roads, my track bike helps me conserve energy and momentum, since my legs are continuously moving even when they're relaxed.

Re: fixie?

What did you start, you ask? You merely opened up another can of super-elitist worms. Sorta like if someone were to ask you "what's a moped, is that like a scooter?"

Re: fixie?

a little hard to ride at first and kind of killed my legs but i do love the fixies. oh yes. mainly because they are so light i can actually pick them up. one-handed!!!

Re: fixie?

Indeed I have pedaled road a few. A couple years back I noticed the surge in popularity and in true capitalist fashion started buying up every vintage euro 10 spd that I came across at garage sales...stripping the guts off and selling frames, wheels and such. Made some decent cash from it.

As I said my statement has little to with the ideas worth (besides my opinion on the goofiness of it). Point being that it is a fad...similar to being a hippie in the 60's. A few of them where real, but most just followed the herd to look cool.

There's a teenager that rides through my hood on a unicycle...Cool kid, kinda weird but I respect his individualism....

Re: fixie?

Called a few local bike shops. They at least knew what I meant by 'fixed gear'. One even says they offer a kit in different sizes to get you started with a conversion. The guy quoted me $40, too! Sounds reasonable to me!

Now all I need is a good road bike. They have used ones at the shop for $75-$150 as well.

If you're interested, call around local shops, kids! It was muchly helpful. Only problem now is I don't live in a city...

Re: fixie?

you don't need to live in the city to enjoy a fixed gear bike. just ride around wherever and skid your face off! hecka sick!!!

Re: fixie?

anyone have an extra moped around that they want to trade for a beautiful 1980 raleigh capri fixie conversion? its worth good chunck of change. i just had my ped stolen and i need a new one!!

Re: fixie?

haha i work at a bicycle shop in port huron, and ever since i went to chicago for the first time when i was 16. i brought that idea home with me and been making them ever since

they are most def bare bones. looks pritty cool

Re: fixie?

Fixies are also all about the components. Dura Ace, Phil Wood, Velocity, Chris King. I just bought a Surly Steamroller with Campagnolo Record.

Re: fixie?

yeah, fixies are a killer leg workout. that's why i built mine, training and stuff. plus, once you get used to it they are a real good time. i am at the university of minnesota and with 50 some thousand students- it is nice to not have to be throwing on the brakes when going through areas where heaps of people are walking. you just go the same speed- ultimate control. it's a good time

Re: fixie?

Mmmmm, Phil Wood...... drooooool

i bet you cant lift that varsity with one hand. can i reccomend ANY other road frame.

Re: fixie?

u won't see most fixie riders riding these bikes till they die, simply because its hard as fuck on ur body. Even the pro's. My roomate is a message and started with a fixed gear then moved on cuz its just to much work as a work bike, and he is dope ass rider and is constantly complaining bout all the posers on fixis these days, it is a fad right now but its not to say it'd not also a defined scene thats here to stay.

Anyways the scene is taking a whole new direction as of recently where its not just about riding (or about that at all) but about mad "tricks" and stuff u can pull on ur bike. I just watched the premiere of Macaframa (look it up) and it was very well done but also shows an alternate direction some people are taking with these bikes, in creating a new sport with them.

check it:

seriously even if ur not into bikes this is a great film with a killer sound track. Fuck posers but respect the guys who have sick skills.

Re: fixie?

o i forgot how amazing this film makes SF look the camera it was filmed on is sick as fuck "the red one" $17,000

Re: fixie?

i prefer mashSF.. havent seen macaframa though.. conclusion based on the previews.
