The joke was that originally pretty much anything steam powered was coal fired. The problem being that you had to fill it with coal (that was small enough to fit the firebox), let it heat up for a half hour or so and then it had to be stoked every few miles as if the boiler wasn't a hand full enough. Where as propane is on demand and simplifys the whole system so much. Its pretty ideal for a bike like this.
