Steam power? W/pic

So, I have my ZZR600 on Craigslist since the wife and I dont use it enough to justify having it. I get a call from a guy who is interested in buying it. It turns out, our paths have crossed before and the guy has all these fantastic bikes. Anyway, he sends me this pic and explains it is his neighbors and it works! I am guessing the propane tanks are used to heat the water to make steam and power the ped. He told me that once it is cooking good, the bike goes about 40mph. I asked if he knew how economical it was and he said it was cheaper to ride 100 miles than to burn his gas barbecue for a dinner. I am going to find out more just because it is so cool. I dont care if it uses more fuel than a ped, I just want to see it run. My only concern is the fact that he is carrying propane tanks in a basket. Think KABOOM! I would hate to get hit and rupture one. Still very cool and if it is as economical as he says, might be cool to ride off-road or trails without the danger of a big impact to rupture a tank. Thoughts anyone?

is he neighbors with mr. wizard by chance? oh no, wait, i think he passed away.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

Just when you think you've seen it all. Well, if anyone has a good terrorist/plutonium hookup I would love to show you guys my flux-capacitor/nuke powered rigid.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

nice BTTF FTW, I was looking at the various pictures of rafter creations the other day and was thinking he should make a delorean style ped, all brushed/polished steel with clear coat, no paint anywhere.

Got any pics of the motor? I think I would re-position the tanks or build a stronger cage around them before venturing out around the evil streets of Boston, but I like the idea. I built a pulse jet ped back in the 80s but it put a new meaning to the word dangerous. The flames shot back 30 feet, and once it started accelerating, the incoming forced air negated the throttle and it began to run away. I had to shut the fuel valve to stop it. And then there was the noise issue. 115 db at 20 feet. And that was at idle.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

I'd like a compressed air moped, there is a company making a car that runs on it, similar operation to steam but w/o heat. The only issue is compressing air to 3000psi and a large enough storage tank.

These cars were supposed to be in production although it has been a while since I saw the article.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

"Bomb-sniffing dogs sniffed my saddlebags... er... bomb-powered moped."

Re: Steam power? W/pic

That is perhaps the cleanest implementation of a pressure-capable motorbike boiler I have seen. Very cool, thanks for the post!

I wish there were some shots of the actual engine - Even if it's the least important part of a steam ped, it's still my favorite. I see what looks like brass in the background...

Greedy, are you really going to rock this? If you look online at other steam bikes, you'll see that the boiler is often up front - that's because they are often hard to keep going. That said, it looks like you might be able to get away with a left-handed throttle, your right hand on the gas regulator, and your mind on the brakes.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

Umm.

bad things can happen off road too...

and then you'll be far away from help..

safety patrol on duty.

looks like fun though!

Re: Steam power? W/pic

This guy needs to get smaller tanks. You couldnt possibly need all of that fuel just to get around. It would work out better to have refillable smaller tanks that only take you a smaller number of miles. You also have to worry about having steam inside of a small shell. I guess its a novel idea but producing steam on a bike seems like a waste to me. Plus the whole system has to be bulky otherwise you might get a rupture in the line and then... ouch hot ass steam right to your face!!! There will also be losses in the system so you would contantly have to add water and then have some form of cooling.... basically its a small power plant... and no matter what you do power plants can only be made so small.

Compessed air is not worth it. you cant possibly have a big enough container to hold enough pressure to get you going anywhere. Dont forget heat is energy and energy is power. Someone should make nuclear mopeds.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

It looks pretty awesome, is it expensive? Maybe not an every day rider but would really be awesome to putt around your local antique engine show. Looks like a propane fired monotube boiler? I think that's probably the best option for a small bike, light, quick heating and pretty resistant. Plus its clean burning and a lot easier to keep going that coal fired ;) Not sure what you need all that fuel for, unless you intend to run for hours at a time.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

Ha ha, how would you run that on coal? Or is that a joke b/c you dont like coal?

Coal is an abundant source that is greener than most people think. There are lots of emission controls on power plants and scrubbers and chem sprays can actually create byproducts that we can use... like the sheetrock in the walls at your house.... So I dont wanna hear any dirty coal jokes

I thought it was really cool but only have this one pic. As for the other ideas, I have no idea why to use all that fuel either. I would think less than one tank. i am going to iquire and see if I can get more pics as I would like tosee the rest of the bike as well. I might even go see it as I dont see one in my future but would still like to see how he built it. As far as being expensive, as a home made project, who knows how much material he had laying around and how much he bought. I would think the guy who built it has to be some kind of engineer (no pun intended) to even have thought something like this up. My hat is off to the guy and am going to try and see it and meet the guy. I guess I can never learn enough. I will report back and thanks for the comments, keep them coming!

lolll reminds me of this:

Re: Steam power? W/pic

Just don't park outside of any federal buildings.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

The joke was that originally pretty much anything steam powered was coal fired. The problem being that you had to fill it with coal (that was small enough to fit the firebox), let it heat up for a half hour or so and then it had to be stoked every few miles as if the boiler wasn't a hand full enough. Where as propane is on demand and simplifys the whole system so much. Its pretty ideal for a bike like this.

Re: Steam power? W/pic

Yes size is a big factor, but with the "green movement" people fail to realize how great coal is for this country. I always hear people doggin it like there is so much crap going into the air, when in all actuallity you can do emissions controls just like a car. If you can make a low emissions toyota that runs off of gas you can make a low emissions coal plant just the same. The problem lies in the fact that china, a country with such a demand for power uses coal b/c its cheap. They dont end up putting emissions controls on b/c their country doesnt require it. Hence coal can be dirty if you dont try and clean it up. The air we breathe is the same that they do. If you want to dog on anyone about coal it shouldnt be the United States who takes the blame and is forced by peta or the UN to take action to stop coal plants. Coal is a resource that america has an abundance of... we should become more independant.
