In your opinion what is the best and or fastest moped, new or old?
I've only own a '98 Tomos Targa LX and its my first and only moped. I am very pleased with its performance and has been running great for me. People say they are getting 45mph out of it with a Turbo muffler, larger jet and a 27 tooth sprocket. I can only get 38mph out of it (after I put these parts on) and 40mph crouching down to the bike (both speeds are if the wind is blowing at my back or no wind.) Fast enough for me!
Swarm and Destroy!
The best moped is the 1977 Bianchi Shark Eagle. It's not the fastest, but my experience w/ it has proven this to be a tough little bike and very well constructed. Her Minarelli engines starts up even in the coldest weather after sitting for days and days and she rides up steep hills faster than any other moped around. It also has a great classic look and looks chopper-ish w/ great suspension and swooped handle bards.
Hands down Puch mopeds are the best mopeds around. They last the longest and
are relatively easy to fix and find parts for on the internet.
Long live the Puch.

WELL, we know what type bikes you ride, ha!, I have seen a new DERBY advertised and it is supposed to be a screamer. Say it will burn out from a stop right out of the box! About 3 grand, Anyone got the scoop on them? oug in VA.
Gotta say Tomos.
15 years of busting chops, stolen/damaged peds, flying over the handlebars and even a wreck that required a steve-austin-style reconstruction, and one name reigns supreme in my mind, and that'd be TOMOS.
I've killed many a 'ped, but no Tomos has ever died on me, not even the one struck by a car in a combined speed 70+mph T-bone collision...it was easier to rebuild than I was, that's for sure.
I must give credit to Puch as well, they do make a right solid machine, but when it comes to the crunch, I'll pick a Tomos every time.

HEy doug where in Va do u live, i live in woodbridge about 30 min. south of dc. My fist and only moped is my 1999 tfr, i rescued this guy form the back of a kids yard who ahd wrecked it badly. With an engine that didn't run and a bdly bent fork i peedleed it home 2 miles hahahaha. Oh well i've gotten it to run and it has been reliable. It ahs a special sentimental value to me.
hey i live in springfield va. i got a tomos targa and i have riden many mopeds. i think the tomos is by far the best. very fast, nice engines, and a die hard attitude.

Hey mike i live in woddbridge, do u have any other mopeds?
Hey Dude, I live in Roanoke, south about 3 1/2 hrs away, sound like you made a good save. I have been rebuilding the AMF ROADMASTER peds (6) but aquired 3 Tomos TT-A35 bikes at auction, 1 is just the frame. also a 49cc bicycle....Doug
THIS IS AN EASY ONE.having a moped shop and seeing them all i have to say the puch is the best.its dependable and parts are easy to get. i will say that tomos runs a close second but since the majority of mopeds in my town are 1970's puchs and there still running strong.i have to say puch. if the year 2030 rolls around and the new tomos i sold in1999 are still cruising around-i will ward tomos a tie for best moped along with puch!worst moped has to be the motebecane. we never could get those things to stay running right.

Kim,
Well, yes, you are probably right about Motobecanes after all, the French gave us the Citroen 2CV, and the Le Car. Just because they don't run all the time does not necessarily make them bad.
Sometimes goodness lies in the eye of the beholder.
OK, so maybe someone gives you a couple of peds and they happen to be Motobecanes. You have to defend them a little, don't you?
one word ... minarelli
i have been indoctrinated into the virtues of the minarelli engine. i have to say that parts are easy enough to come by, the engine is very simple and easy to work on, and it comes on lots and lots of different mopeds (mostly italian, of course).
puchs are nice, as i'm sure tomos are, and motobecanes look slick ... but a nice vintage italian moped just looks so great cruising along the road ... and my bianchi is one of these beautiful italian bella donnas
LONG LIVE MOTOBECANE!!!!
