.. good detective work .. it IS an 'infinite' gearing mechanism called a 'variator' .. and they are smooth and you don't generally feel any 'shifting'.

As far as the PA50s are concerned .. I have one and have blabbed all about them on this forum .. use the 'search' button above .. I do believe you will find a couple hundred posts about PA's and mods in the last year.

Mine is a 78 PA50I that goes between 40 and 50mph depending on how I set it up.

(it went 21mph stock)
