Feels good, don't it?
I got my reg last Wednesday for my 74 Puch.
Should get another one this week for my Snark, and I'm mailing out one for my 78 Mk II tomorrow.
Hell ya it feels good...i was so excited to see the envelop... now to decide how to mount the plain, borderline ugly plate.. lol
i just got my permit too, and insurance... deciding to take the course or not and get the M1...
so i sent in my original title with the registration, i got the plate and registration, but no title back, they were supposed to send it back right? no one there can give me a straight answer about it, what do i do?
did u provide a bil of sale or any other document?
Wait...How do you get a title for your ped in CA?
to answer all questions:
mopedy-idk bout the title, but i dont think its very important in all honest because i didnt have a title or anything when i sent mine in so i doubt you/i need one... again, i dont know for sure though...
dan-i did not provide any other documentation... all i provided was the Reg. 230, filling out only 2 sections and a check for $18 i think it was...
Andrew-it took em about 3wks to get the plates and the registration back to me... VERY fast from what iv heard in the past
the form doesn't ask for a title. the form doesn't even have the word "title" on it. if you can read these forums, you can read your reg 230 form.
I don't even think mopeds are titled in california.
why is this so hard for so many?
are you doing m1 or m2? i wonder what the moped behind the wheel is like. can't be much! what? turn on the gas, pedal, brake! fix!!
you have to take the skils test with a 150cc or better to get an M1... the funny thing is with the permit i can ride a motorcycle right now if i want, if i get the M2, i cant?? nuts...so with the permit i can, and with the license i cant.
the only stuff that exists for a moped in california are:
the moped license plate
and
the "moped identification card" which serves as the title/bill of sale/pink slip. it's just a white piece of paper with blue and white text on it. you are supposed to carry a copy of this while riding. you are also supposed to fill out the transfer information at the bottom when you sell it to someone else.
you do not need anything else.
That's totally incorrect, you need a M2 license to ride a two wheeled gas powered moped.
Dustin is just talking about the moped itself.
YOU need an M2 to ride but the MOPED doesn't need the M2 to be registered.
thats the catch M2
I looked though the dmv site and it say its $17... so which is it?
i sent in 17 dollars, because thats what i read too, but when i got my reg in the mail, the receipt said 18... so it must of just changed and they still honored the old price.
It's $17 for the registration and $1 for the plate. So, if you already have a plate, its $17.
just mailed that shit out. now the wait...
ya, i got my receipt back that said $18 as well, but i got everything no problem....
to answer someones question i plan on getting an M1 license because im going to start building a nice old 700-1000 cafe racer to cruise around on... it should be a fun project
I asked a cop today what he'd look for on a moped to not ticket it. He guessed and said mirrors and blinkers and told me to call CHP. I called CHP, he said nay to the mirrors and blinkers as long as there's a break light. After that dude learned some things for himself he said they won't or don't register it and that it doesn't need a plate. But that if I go over 30mph I'll need an M1 or M2.
But I sent my reg.230 form in a few weeks ago, without a bill of sale(cause the one I had was weaksauce), and they sent it back saying there was no record of the vin and that they can't credit the $18 bucks to anything. I sent it back with a 'Statement of Facts' form from dmv, on whichI wrote that I want an original title and plate. That was a week ago. I'll let cha know.
So were you informed that you need a plate?
omg stop asking cops. have you met cops? they're not smart. read the law for yourself.
Here is the Motor Vehicle Code section that states what a moped needs for equipment:
Motorized Bicycle: Safety and Equipment Requirements
24015. (a) Motorized bicycles shall comply with those federal motor vehicle safety standards established under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 (15 U.S.C., Sec. 1381, et seq.) which are applicable to a motor-driven cycle, as that term is defined in such federal standards. Such standards include, but are not limited to, provisions requiring a headlamp, taillamp, stoplamp, side and rear reflex reflectors, and adequate brakes.
(b) In addition to equipment required in subdivision (a), all motorized bicycles operated upon a highway shall be equipped with a mirror as required in subdivision (a) of Section 26709, a horn as required in Section 27000, and an adequate muffler as required in subdivision (a) of Section 27150.
(c) Except as provided in subdivisions (a) and (b), none of the provisions of this chapter relating to motorcycles and motor-driven cycles, as defined in this code, shall apply to a motorized bicycle.
Amended Ch. 421, Stats. 1978. Effective January 1, 1979.

So, requesting an original title was the way to go. Got my plate and identification card form in the mail this past week.
You must have had the only competent employees at DMV working on your app. I've been trying to get my moped "identification card" for months. First they sent my transfer app back because I didn't give them the original form with the seller's signature. I had sent them a copy. So, I sent them the original. Then they sent it back and wanted me to fill out another form and asked for info that was already on the original ID card. I filled it out and sent it back to the Director of DMV in Sacramento, complaining about the delay, and hoping that he would straighten it out. This was over a month ago.
Crap.
I just sent a xerox copy in too. It already came back once because I thought it fell out of the system so I tried to do a "first time" registration. Then I found the bill of sale from the dude that had it two owners ago.
We'll see.
suckers cashed my $18 check so I think i'm good, just waiting for my goods.
You'd better hope so. My check cleared the same day that I got my plate in the mail, so...
Yeah, luckily my Swinger came from Minnesota or Montana (it was for sure an M state. haha), so I knew that DMV wouldn't have it in their system. I just sent in a request for a first-time reg, and I got my plate two weeks later. This was just a couple of weeks ago.
got my plate and paper the other day.
reg 230 and 18 dollar check.
took about two weeks.
Good luck, they cashed my check almost a month ago and i still haven't gotten anything in the mail.
