if you buy ethanol from oil companies you aren't really doing any good. I was speaking of distilling your own, an experimental still license is free and good for 5000 gallons per year, and yes after about $1500 of set up it does cost about $.60/gal. You also receive the same tax credit that oil companies get...$.61/gal.
You do lose a little bit of efficiency. The last car we did was a dart that went from 13 down to 11. Do the math, you still come out while sticking it to the man. You do have to upjet. You also need to advance your timing some as the alcohol has a lower flash point.
Ethanol has nothing to do with "ruining" our economy. 10 years of low interest rates and people spending more money than they can pay back artificially inflated the perception of our economy. 20 years of replacing high paying manufacturing jobs with low wage service jobs in mainly retail has "ruined" our economy.
