New guy, old moped

Greetings. I'm a new guy from Charlotte NC and have decided to rebuild a moped as a project.

I'm into working on cars and have also done a lot of work on BMX bikes, but this will be my first motorized bike:

I have a friend who is a motorcycle mechanic who can help me out, but he han not done a lot with mopeds.

It's an 85 Puch Maxi (right?)

Is this going to be a difficult bike to find all the pieces I need for? it's a 2 speed.

I'm in the process of tearing it down, I'm sending the frame to my buddy at the motorcycle shop to get the rust out of the tank and re-coat it. I'm going to send all the parts off to another friend of mine's shop to get painted after that,

Re: New guy, old moped

yup, thats a maxi. theyre very east to find parts for. you even got the nice 5 star wheels. should be a great first moped.

Put an exclamation point at the beginning and end of your link

Re: New guy, old moped

easy to work on mopeds. if you know bikes and you know cars and your friend knows motorcycles you wont have too hard of a time figuring it out. looks like youre going to be ok since you havent cheaped out i can tell as youre cleaning the gas tank which saves a world of trouble. that engine kitted will give you so much torque and speed its not funny. a friend dan sabat (also a khz) threw a reed valve athena kit on that bike and it flew without even being portmatched.

the rims tend to peel so id get it painted or powdercoated along with the bike. i dunno what youre going for but you can do anything from making it a stock cruiser or a souped up speed demon but that bike will be easy to find parts and mopedarmy is definitely the primary source of your future knowlege in mopeds

Re: New guy, old moped

looks like fun... i really like that seat

Re: New guy, old moped

Yeah, I'm not into cheaping out on projects, and this done right will probably be 10X cheaper than my cars.

I'm painting all of the parts of the bike that I'm keeping, including the wheels. I'm going to paint them an awesome slightly darker gold with metal flakes, He actually had it leftover from some wheels he painted.

The frame will be black with clearcoat.

I'd like to put slightly taller chrome handlebars and possibly a slightly longer fork (I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not)

I don't want to modify the engine on this one yet as it will be my first moped, I'd like to rebuild the engine though. If I can do a slight performance upgrade that won't overly alter reliability I'd do it.

Can I buy reproduction decals for this anywhere?

Thanks for the help thus far guys..

Re: New guy, old moped

That models tank was a painted on Puch logo, but you can get the older style tank decals on ebay for around $10 shipped if the bid does not go to high, so just wait for the next auction , since the person put a set a decals up every week, except who knows when that supply will run out.

Ok, shall we start a part's list??

Coil with wire, front brake cable, speedo cable, front brake handle, starting clutch lever, side covers, spark plug, in line fule filter. looks pretty good though

and FYI the brake on the mags are differeent than the spoked wheels.

Re: New guy, old moped

I was looking around and couldn't find a service manual PDF for the 85 year specifically. Is there a place I can go to find newer service and parts manuals?

Also, how well will the 2 speed hold up to engine upgrades? Is it going to be best to leave this 2 speed stock?

I'm going to get everything torn down and refinished before I make a new parts purchase, I'll probably order a few hundred dollars worth of stuff at once when I do. I'll post pics of the process up as soon as I have anything worth sharing completed.

Re: New guy, old moped

50plus, the 5 stars have the same brakes as the spokes, if i'm not mistaken. Its the snowflakes that are different.

Re: New guy, old moped

Jon, you are correct.

Re: New guy, old moped

The za50(2 speed motor) is not the best motor in the world to kit.

Jon, thanks for setting me straight.
