just picked up a motobecane...

Ϫ‡☄ಬ∞ ƀƖḬƝƊ ƤǂƿƎ ∞ಬ☄‡Ϫ /

.....4 cheep. and yeah of course i have some questions....

first of all does anyone know what model this is? i'm pretty srue it's a mobylette but there are no sidecovers.

here is the craigslist add for your perusal...

http://cleveland.craigslist.org/rvs/744936772.html

anyway it's missing some parts.... look in the attached pic and tell me what exactly i am missing here... it looks like the air filter....

anyway i'm going to be reading all about mobys now...

here's what it said on the vin plate (but no vin on it?)

"Paijitia Industrial Co, LTD." then below that it says "5" then "1981"

on the engine it was stamped "MP 068045"

so... if anyone has any info let me know.... i suppose i'll be hitting up mopedjunkyard.com for some missing parts.... like a spedometer and odometer....

Re: just picked up a motobecane...

looks like a 50v to me

Re: just picked up a motobecane...

You would save more money to buy from the Buy/Sell forum and/or ebay. You need the air filter cover and it looks like the thing in your hand was melted in a fire, but the rest of the moped looks good.

Re: here's a pic

Take more pictures - side views both sides - down by the engine as well. The CL link is gone, but it looked like the coil might be missing as well.

Welcome to the world of Mobys. There is a lot of info on the Wiki, make sure to visit Mabecane's Mobylette Corner. Learn to use the Search function on the Repair forum, and try to find another Moby owner in your area! Pick up a piston stop and Cam/Clutch puller - you'll use them a lot.

oh? hmmm.... how can you tell? thanks....

Re: spark and coil side

If you're like many owners, you'll get tired of cleaning out the openings in the Gurtner carb with a few strands of copper wire and will end up putting a Dellorto carb on there.

On the right side is the flywheel, and underneath are the points and timing cam. The nut holding on the flywheel is called the Novi nut, and is the source of frustration for many new owners. It loosens to the RIGHT! You can use a 3/8" socket wrench to fo in the opening, but holding the flywheel still is the challenge. Earlier I mentioned getting a piston stop, which is the best way of stopping the flywheel. It works on every variety of moped and is well worth the $10 in my book. You can get one at www.quarterkick.com as well as other sites. They're out of the cam/clutch puller, another inexpensive, but almost required tool for Moby owners.

Re: spark and coil side

check the petcock i think you're missing a lever ... focus is fuzzy though.

Re: spark and coil side

It differs from a typical 50V in the following ways

the luggage rack is painted

the rear fender support is different

the toolbox side covers are painted with that M sticker

no tank badges, just Motobecane logo painted on

painted front fender

I also haven't seen a typical 50V come in that color.

Just my observations, I am pretty sure its a traveler.

Re: spark and coil side

Actually no, I just checked the photos section.

You own a 1981 Motobecane Romp.

DING DING DING DING DING DING

petcock

Ϫ‡☄ಬ∞ ƀƖḬƝƊ ƤǂƿƎ ∞ಬ☄‡Ϫ /

yea its missing something....

Re: petcock

I'm sure 50V sidecovers would work.

Re: petcock

The tool to stop the piston can be made out of a spark plug. Break out the ceramic from the top and middle of the spark plug, and take a tap, and tap the inside of the spark plug, and get a bolt the same size as the tap, and about 3.75 inches long , and screw it in the taped out spark plug. Once this tool is put together, round off the head of the bolt with a file and/or grinder.

Re: petcock

BE REALLY DAMN CAREFUL PUTTING THAT MUFFLER BACK ON

Ϫ‡☄ಬ∞ ƀƖḬƝƊ ƤǂƿƎ ∞ಬ☄‡Ϫ /

1) get off

2) take all apart

3) clean

4) put back on
