Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Yeah, I just got into mopeds about a month ago, but I'm seriously considering getting out of them.

Here's why, tell me if I'm nuts.

1) Where I live, is the suburbs on the cusp of the city. Between me and the city where I'd like my moped to take me is:

----Serious Ghetto

----Highways

----"mini highways" - streets with no bike lanes at 45mph

Obviously I can't go on highways. So on my first LONG ride into the city to run some errands, I took the mini highway route, cutting down side streets for shortcuts when I could. It was SCARY. People just don't know how to drive.

On my way back, I opted for the ghetto ride. It was more scary than the mini highway route. I'm talking streets that have drive by shootings in daylight. I got quite a few stares as I drove through.

Buffalo is just not a bike/moped friendly town. At least with a bike, I could ride on the sidewalk when it got too scary/traffic-y.

2) I have no one to ride with, and only my little neighborhood to ride if I did. No one I know, other than my roommate, has a moped. her schedule and my schedule don't mesh, so we can never joy ride together.

3) That leaves little trips for errands in my hood here and there for my moped. The thing is, all those little trips are totally in walking distance, and I feel like a lard ass not just walking and instead taking my moped.

4) I'm a drummer by trade. I tour with a few bands and have endorsements with a cymbal and electronic drum company. I compose music for soundtracks and the thing that pays the bills is web design. So my hands/arms are very important to my livelihood. A crash would be catasrophic, and it makes me drive like a total weenie. Seems like every day I log in here, someone is dying or getting severely hurt. :-(

I really love my moped, I love tinkering around with it and I bought another to totally rebuild and customize, but I sort of feel like maybe I should sell them and get out of it all together.

Thoughts?

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

if you like it, keep doing it... drive around where you can. get a little trailer hitch carrier to take your ped somewhere safe and fun. but, whatever you think. i say keep it up!

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

I have a friend in Buffalo. When you decide that you're a total weenie, and want to sell your Sachs, please email me and let me know: burningwhitechurches@gmail.com

Also, if yer afraid, you should quit. But don't act like the rest of us don't need our fucking arms. :)

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

oh, yeah, also good advice:

stop living in fucking Buffalo. It seems like you have a pretty mobile job. Leave.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

LOL I know, I need to get about of Buffalo. But not yet, my mom is sick and I'm all the family left she has.

I'd love to be in NYC or San Francisco or Germany. And one day I will, just not right at the moment.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Ghettos suck, theyre always in the way of where you want to go. I would keep that jewel for life! Just save it or store it at my house!

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Midlife Crisis Alan /

fast bike = ride wherever you want.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

yep. get a cool motorcycle. or an old trail bike or something. mopeds are cool, but only the tip of the iceberg as far as awesome two-wheeled vehicles go. id recommend looking out for some late 60s/early70s small japanese motorcycles. get em while theyre still affordable. i see these things SKYROCKETING within the next 10 years. my uncle told me he used to buy CT70s for pennies and fix them up to sell for $300 a pop back in the late 80s. good luck finding a completely TRASHED one for $300 at this point.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

I'm already going 35. :-\ This happened to me on a highway the other day too, in a car, speed limit was 50, was going 55, this lady flew up behind me LAYING on her horn and then zipped around me and cut me off.

So 35 on my moped with drivers like that in this town is fast enough for me...

The other day I had another lady come up behind me while on my moped going 35 in a gasp 35, beeping her horn for me to get out of the way. Where I was supposed to go exactly, I'm not sure.

Just sucks, I wish there were more side ways around here and it would be a big deal, but I'm literally surrounded by a whole lot of undrivable areas.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Yeah, I thought about that actually, if I could find a cool old BMW mcycle I might go for it. Mopeds seemed like a safe entry to the two wheeled world, but I think I changed my mind! I think I'd feel safer on a motorcycle...

I dropped the band van off the other day for some repairs and tossed the moped in the back to ride it back home and get some work done and everyone was in astonishment that I was going to ride THAT back home. Am I missing something?? I think my moped is pretty awesome, does it have a "kick me" sign on it??

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

WOW it has turn signals I'll buy it!

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

It's got a fancy windshield and baskets too, but I took them off. It was a little old man's grocery getter before me. ;-)

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

That's all I use mine for now. I wanted to commute to work but I don't even trust leaving them at the train station anymore.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Munich ftw

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

No way, Hamburg! Used to live there... I like northern germany better...

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

there is no out, unless you sell your moped, then your out... otherwise why quit something that only requires you own a moped and use it when you want...

but yeah get a truck drummer! Mopeds and drums dont mix...now deezy will post himself nude playing drums on his ped...

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

I understand. Sad. The only suggestion I have is to say, "move," but I doubt that's a nice answer.

If I'm ever in your niche, can I jam with ya?

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

hehhee. If ya think my guitar sucks, then you'd hate my drumming, huma. I can play them, but I can't stay consistent long enough. It just kills me.

I taught my first drummer (who turned out great, but now likes bass more) how to do a drum roll. Weird that some people don't know how to do that.

I got a girl drummer now when she's in town. She is doing pretty good, but I heard Liz's playing and I am wowed! I played guitar naked once, but never drums. Sounds like a sticky-butt situation. I'd love to see a nice cocktail set-up on a moped! hahaa

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Canadians will tailgate you , but they wont honk their horns .

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

just ride when you can, for fun....it'll keep you sane

use your bimmer for the errands

nice drumming by the way

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Are you guys google stalking me? Where are you getting links to my drumming. lol Thanks though!

This is my band / dog / moped vehicle. I actually rarely drive the BMW either. I actually rarely go anywhere really, as I work from home!

That please don't kill me sign is perfect. I need one of those!

Vic, Ithaca isn't moped friendly either? I would have thought it would be. Ithaca was on my short list of places to move to for a little while, I like it there...

Rick - Canadians are an odd bunch. You drive like grandmas down here, but then as soon as I get up there, I'm getting blown off the road!

Deezy, you were supposed to send me some tracks to record some drums too, I told ya I would. ;-)

So, my new pannier bags just showed up and now I'm in a love hate relationship with my moped. After driving it all day, I shut it off for an hour or so and turned it back on, to gas spilling out of the carb when I tried to get it going. Guess I got a stuck float or something. Off to tinker and learn to love my moped again.

Honestly, it's not the moped. It's the idiots around me in their tank cars trying to run me over... I hope that as more people go to scooters and bikes, Buffalo drivers will get a little more used to it... I just wish more people would ride mopeds around here.

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Hm, my image of my band / dog / moped carrier didn't show up. Let's try that again...

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Nah, your guitar sound is cool, i was just pissed...and besides, my wife is from Montana, Ive spent alot of time there and it is the most impressive state . Not only that Im 1/16 Blackfoot, so tachnically that is my homeland.

Respect my butte

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Well this is sure getting creepy. Between you and Deezy playing drums naked......

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Carb float fixed, new gas line and filter and pannier bags installed. Now I just need that safe to ride moped area and I'll be all set.

BTW, hope you weren't talking about me playing drums naked! Not gonna happen. :-)

Re: Thinking about getting out of mopeds...

Ithaca is very moped friendly. besides the hills on 3 sides of town.

im just sick of it here. time for a change.
