Can they do this??

I was riding home and some asshole passed me on the left and damn near hit me. I saw him coming but it seems that when I moved over to the right to avoid getting hit by him he took this as a sign that he can get even closer to me as he switched. This was on a road that is one lane in each direction. Its not a busy road its a side street, but there are parked cars around that cause limited options for maneuverability I was doing the limit as well. I guess what I'm asking is if its legal for him to pass someone doing the limit by going around them in the opposite lane?? Why cant other motorists have respect for us mopeders? We have the same rights as everyone else on the road, I mean people respect motorcycles. I was doing 5 over the limit actually. This guy is impatient! He would see what its like if he hit me or someone else, Then he will learn REAL fast

um, get used it, unfortunately... it's a crap shoot every time you strap on your helmet. you can do everything correct and still end up being carried off the field of play.

as far as your question, what the guy did obviously wasn't legal and if he had tangled with an oncoming vehicle... well, you can guess the consequences.

Re: Can they do this??

here its not just mopeds they do it to they will do anything to get there a few seconds quicker

it dont matter if your on a moped scooter motorcycle bicycle or if your going the speed limit in a car they will pass and try an run you off the road

Re: Can they do this??

most one lane roads you can pass lower traffic to the left. Its all dependent on if there are specific road signs that specifically prohibit passing on the one lane road. It's also dependent on if the lane has a broken yellow or white lines. If its a solid line, its a no go. At least it like that here in California though.

Re: Can they do this??

Overtaking is okay so long as they change lanes before passing. More often than not though, cars don't respect you and your ped as a street vehicle, and just try to squeeze past you in the same lane.

sometimes you get a feeling that the car behind you wants to try something stupid... most of the time i just drift out to the left side of the lane, in the hopes of reminding him that i'm not a bicycle.

I specifically ride in the middle of the lane so that they don't even think about it. I've had too many close calls not to. I do this on my bicycle as well because I've been ran into a sewer grate and popped my tire and bent my rim, although I didn't fall which was amazing.

Re: Can they do this??

Yea, from my experiences I've noticed that people driving cars generally hate mopeds. They're just jealous of us.

Though, I love it when some asshole speeds around me only to get stuck at a light 100 yards up. That gives me the opportunity to exercise my shit giving abilities. As a standard I usually yell "LEARN HOW TO SHARE THE ROAD" followed by a tasteful derogatory noun. But I like to mold my 'shit - giving' to fit the situation. Ergo to SUVs i would yell "STOP KILLING THE ENVIRONMENT" followed by said noun. Or to a group roid rage homophobes, "STOP SUCKING EACH OTHERS DICKS AND LEARN HOW TO SHARE THE ROAD WITHOUT KILLING THE ENVIRONMENT" noun (plural)

Re: Can they do this??

psh. I just pull out my glock and let shit fly.

Re: Can they do this??

I find it much safer to ride not in the middle of the lane, but on the left of the lane (as long as you are going the limit or it is a road with 2 lanes in one direction). the middle of the lane is the grease track. Think of where all the grease and shit drips off of cars. So you want that under your wheels? If you hold your lane you may get people pissed, but it forces asshole drivers to use the other lane to pass you. Ride safe, be aggressive.

Re: Can they do this??

I agree with Mike, after a while of getting blown by, sometimes very close to my bike, by impatient cagers (this was when I was on my slow Ciao), I pretty quickly discovered that it was a lot less stressful to take a very aggressive lane position. Haven't had any problems with obviously pissed of people since then, and don't get cars blowing by me 1" from my rear wheel.

Re: Can they do this??

never move over to the right. hold your lane, tons of accidents happen cause scooterists and mopeds GIVE cars the right of way. its your right, do not give it away.

if they really need to pass you they can do it illegally and hopefully a cop will see.

Re: Can they do this??

Unfortunately in Ohio the law states mopeds must ride no more than 3' from the edge of the curb when possible. But yeah, if people are going to pass me on sketchy two lane roads, blind corners, up hills, or if I am able to do the speed limit, I take the lane.

Re: Can they do this??

Yeah I think the best thing to do is hold your lane and let people pass. I'd much rather have someone pass in the whole oncoming lane when its full and clear for them. then be inches from some huge mirror hitting my head on a Denali XL. Its just going to happen and you have to be able to accept it. ride knowing that people need to pass you. If you've ever driven a car you know how annoying it is to have that guy on a bike in front of you doing 23 in a 25. because chances are that the 25mph road is actually in reality 35-40mph to most people. and if you don't pass. you will end up with a line of 20 cars behind you all antsy to get around you. so you have to pass before some jackass in a jeep comes swerving out of the line and passes all pissed off at 60mph putting everyone in danger. so if people want to do past you let them pass. what does at matter as long as they aren't getting right in on you. or running you off the road.

Re: Can they do this??

The best is when you signal to turn left on said local roads and douchebag behind you takes it as a 'go around' sign. That one about left me underneath a Ram 3500.

And that's a stupid law you got there in Ohio. I'm sure it's long been ignored. Between the yellow and the oil streak is the place to be. Never having good brakes, I'm always aware of where the oil spots are.

Speaking as a person living in the worst possible place in the country for driving, #1 in road rage as well as other traffic issues. I will say, drivers down here have no respect for cars, trucks, police, ambulances, mopeds, scooters, children, anything. I have people pass me daily when I'm doing 55-60 in a 40 and they pass me like I'm standing still, people run red lights and honk if you don't, they think stop signs are a suggestion, and if you say anything or they get pulled over it's someone else's fault. Seriously it is so bad here that even the cops just watch most days. I regularly get run off the road on small roads with my jeep to where someone passed someone else or passed someone whom stopped at a 4 way and they just didn't. It's just truly ridiculous, so I won't ride down here period as a daily commuter... I love my moped I feel so damn comfortable on it, but the people down here would run over a walk a thon for crippled children injured by bad driving if it would save 3-4seconds on their commute. Worst thing I saw this week, person passing an ambulance with full lights on while a cop watched.. I had to pull off road to avoid death due to drivers driving on wrong side of road this week 3 at least, note they were all SUVS, not passing, just driving into oncoming traffic on a major highway...

Miami Sucks...
