what does "OLIO" mean?.....

OIL!

OIL EVERYWHERE! OH MY GOSH ITS SOAKING INTO THE CARPET!

I removed the side cover from my Garelli for the first time today, expecting the clutch housing to be similar to my other ped. Instead I dumped twenty year-old oil all over my floor.

What's done is done, what kind of _olio_ does that little gearbox need now since i've effectively drained it?

non-detergent SAE 30. try 10w 30. and sawdust or detergent to soak up that olio.

i believe its 14oz. to fill the gearbox? someone correct me if im wrong.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

14oz works. fill until it comes out the fill hole

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

ha ha thanks guys.

looks like I got a bottle of 5w 30, and 10w 40 layin around. I'm gonna go with the 5w.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

this exact same thing happened to me. I was inside a carpeted van....

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

I think most USA oil has detergent in the multi weight oil, so the 30 weight non detergent is the best known way to replace your OLIO. Harbor Freight has air tool oil that is 20 weight that i think is non detergent, but i never asked opinions about this , but i think 20 weight would the best job, since 30 weight is to thick when you are starting out cold.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

what exactly is the point of it being a non-detergent oil?

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

Just an FYI of oil or worse transmission fluid - It eats the backing holding the carpet fiber together. Eventually the carpet crumbles to nothingness.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

Detergent oil will eat up some clutches and parts.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

You can get non detergent oil of any flavor at Tractor Supply Stores. They usually have it. When did you get a Garelli?

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

I bought it a week ago, off an old guy. A RallySport LS with gold trim and gold mag wheels, real sexy. It's all part of my brilliant plan to sell mopeds to my friends so I'll have someone to ride with.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

Detergent oils have additives in it to keep any water in suspension. In a car engine the oil gets hot enough to boil the water off but in a gearbox it never gets hot enough and the water just keeps building up and pretty soon you have something that looks like yellow mayonnaise, and because there is so much water in it it quits lubricating properly.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

Olio means margarine, here in america. Or else butter. I can't remember.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

so i could just put butter in my gearbox?

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

Several companies (Motul and Spectro, for 2) make 30 weight 2 stroke motorcycle gearbox oil. The Motul brand specifically says for mopeds right on the bottle. I used it in my Tomos for awhile. Worked fine. Peace. Jerry.

Re: what does "OLIO" mean?.....

Well, butter may work, but you really have to watch the calories. I can't believe it's not butter would be safer. Plus, if you break down, fabio will push your ped home.
