things that happened on the boston ride tonight:

-3.5 mopeds, or roughly 40 percent of the total group broke down either totally or partially

-fratbone was involved in a high speed police chase that could have ended in tragedy

-simonsez's marriage may be in jeopardy after the fiasco of our ride caused him to be approximately 1000 hours late getting home

-half the group got separated and lost in the pitch dark of nowheresville while at the same time

-the other the group got nabbed by the cops

-my moped essentially stopped functioning on hills

-i said the c word while no one could hear me because i was mad at my batavus

did i miss anything?

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

are you using one of your ported cylinders? if so that could be problem on hills. other than that you were going 30 avg and thats not bad at all.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

i am using a ported one, but it wasnt that bad on hills before. i just got a dellorto 15/15 and i think i havent gotten the jetting right yet, even though the plug looks really good.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

You forgot, the 'superman' hehe :D

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

nabbed?

Whats that mean?

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

Conor and MopedJay didnt even make it out of Andover on our way down because Jay's piece of shit italian carb didnt want to work with a frog bike...

Maybe next week guys

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

Not to worry, there's always next week!

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

How fast was fratbone gona in that high speed cop chase and how did it end.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

Does that 3.5 figure include my running out of gas and naively not having any oil ?

also

Fratbone's high speed chase was one-sided (but definitely high speed!). The cop stayed with the three of us to check our papers and in the end let us go with a "you kids be careful" admonishment.

thirdly

On the way home i saw a someone with a silver helmet on a dark moped, with a messenger bag. I tried to catch up to them but a streetlight stopped me. Was that anyone here ? it was on Somerville Ave to Elm Street to Willow, maybe around midnight?.....

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

heres thrilling back road video, while i was still actually going fast, i.e., not on a slope of any kind.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

sonofabitch, how do you post links here? why does the coding have to be so weird?

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

sheila, you kids be careful!

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

You dont have a head light.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

i totally have a head light, and it works surprisingly well. just doesnt show up so good with the camera.

also, i think i found out why my moped started sucking shit: leaking between head and cylinder!

check out these photos, and check out the staining patterns from the premix:

looks like it was escaping from the exhaust and engine side of the head. i dont know whats up with that, as i tightened it pretty good, and using the right procedure. but i think this explains why my low end got worse as the ride wore on, and why i couldnt get enough torque/power to make it up hills.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

wtf. i wanted to break down too!

fuck working at HESS, i can get all the free air i want reguardless!!

oh and that masked moped rider shiela saw? 5 bucks kevin driscall! on some moto-thing with a minarelli! and some gigantic EV Racing pipe on it. seriously like 30mm.

i need to get off work next week.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

Patrick Mattison /

Anybody know a good place to get a new moped?

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

are you guys doing any rides in downtown boston? or is it all out in greater/outside boston?

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

and thats supposed to be FUN ?

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

My ass still hurts.

After racking up 47 miles by the time I got home I found stuff locked up that shouldn't have been... like the door to get in.

We need a road captain who is responsible for all riders on all future trips and a couple sets of walkie-talkies would be good too.

The most fun I had was while waiting for the others to show up while at the OtherSide. After that it got a bit crazy.

I don't want to ride in any town that begins with the letter "W" again.

It's going to take a week to get things right again with the other half.

I'm sure I'll think of something else as soon as it comes to me.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

props to the Boston kids. You guys are seriously getting your shit together.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

thanks for the props. i propose next week we ride to south boston along the beach, everyone shojuld get their peds registered and mopeds fully functional. and jay the plug might look good because our idle mixture is fine, the only way to get a proper reading is to get a new plug, and go full throttle for a minute under load. kill the ignition and pull it out then read. you can do the same for half throttle too.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

i LOVE the south boston beaches. pleasure bay, castle island?!

also, i don't think southie cops will bother us.

and, mopedjay is taking bones to his moped infirmary (graveyard?!) tonight.

phone numbers?

hey, do you guys want to exchange phone numbers? i'm constantly lost/falling behind/broken down and i feel bad constantly harassing phil because his is the only number i have.

i promise i won't prank call you!

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

if by "getting your shit together" you mean breaking down, pushing mopeds for hours, and getting pulled over by cops!

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

peter, what on earth happened?! did you get separated? gosh we really needed SABAT! he comes after me when i'm too slow.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

A few more thoughts:

I don't know about you guys but I would have felt a lot more comfortable if I had ridden those roads in the daylight first. I couldn't see shit on some of those black back roads in Weston and Newton. Pot holes and a lot of crap on the shoulder. Some of those roads were just downright dangerous for us to be on.

Need to stay tighter and make sure everyone is okay. A lead rider (road/trip captain) and a tail rider, preferably in constant contact via walkie talkie.

Need to make certain everyone can make the trip. Questions to the group before a trip like; can you ride more that 4 miles without breaking down. Can your bike exceed all posted speed limits. Do we all have fuel, etc. You know, silly stuff like that.

I think it's best that if we're going to ride that we ride safely and that we all remain together. Trying to keep up with peds that can probably hit 60 isn't much fun for me. If I want to go that fast it'll be with something with a suspension system that can handle those speeds - like a motorcycle. Besides, I don't like ANY chance encounters with the pigs - particularly in one of those towns that begin with a W. The other half who got pulled over last night were lucky they got pulled over by Barney Fife and not Buford T. Justice.

Regroup... Plan B maybe?

What is plan B?

Mopedjay, Sabat, Conor and Susan, we missed you, but you didn't miss much.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

I second, third and fourth this motion. We'll meet and take off from my place. This way Alice can meet you guys and Homer and Lady can have their beds back. Maybe we'll get a babysitter and get her to ride too.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

in total, i had a pretty good time, mostly because i was familiar with the area, and despite the fact that i was having moped problems. i pulled the whole thing at 1AM LAST NIGHT, finished the porting job, cleaned it up, put it back on, and it rode like a champ this morning. i dont think the head i have fits properly on this cylinder or something. when i hold up a bright light behind it, i can see a thin gap on the edges, even though i tightened it properly, so im going to need a head gasket.

also joe - i have actually been doing plug chops throughout, including with new plugs (this one was new as of a few days ago). luckily by next week this one will officially become a project bike and i'll have a fast moby.

Re: things that happened on the boston ride tonigh

When I looked behind me and saw that the cop had stopped a bunch of mopeds and the flashing blue lights my instinct for escape and survival kicked in (I'm unregistered) I made a split second decision to hit the throttle and all I could hear was my motor winding up to a screaming loud pitch in my ears...

by the time I crested the first hill I was pushing 50+ down a steep twisty pitch black road... I could see headlights behind me back in the distance slowly fading at every curve...

when I got to the red light at the bottom I went around 3 stopped cars and hit the throttle and ran the light heading onto a flat stretch of rte 30 towards the intersection of 128.. a major highway

...basically a cloverleaf with 4 off ramps emptying into my path.... I weaved through them and ran 2 more res lights till I crossed over 128 and across the town border into Newton....

I got away!!

what a rush.... my heart was pounding for like 15 minutes.... so I kicked back at a gas station and had a pepsi and a smoke and waited for the rest of the gang who luckily were released and came riding along in about 15 minutes!

Re: phone numbers?

Good idea Susan, let's do that. It sure would have alleviated a lot of stress last night... not that anyone could have heard their phone ringing or anything like that.

email me and I'll shoot out my number. I think Phil has a group email, if not, I'll put one together and send it to everybody. That is if this is something everybody is cool with.
