Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Ok so I finally drove the 8 hours to WAY western New York to get the allstate I won on ebay. Turns out allthough it runs, its gonna be a longer term project then a short get it going and ride it one. Im missing carb parts, racks, needs tires and very likely wheels, a tank, all new cables, a rewireing job , but shit, with some new pedals it will be MINT. PS, I love it.

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Here are a few pics of the Magnum way up in the hills abouve Keuka Lake in the Finger lake wine region. Simply wonderful place to ride. I tried very hard to get some photo's that captured the beauty of the place, and the moped, and that showed how damn far up in the air i was, but it was difficult!

Magnum 2hp, 66 jet, free flow air filter, Za50, Head gasket removed for hills! It performed admirably. It's not a moby. But i still love it and was astounded at some of the shit it pulled me up!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Lastly , can anyone tell by looking at those pictures why those bikes went almost 400miles today but then within 4 miles of my house both bounced off the trailer?

I know why..

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

haha scariest thing is Zeke...It runs NOW.

Shit you not.

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Although that post looks right, the handlebars aren't original. The shrouding is gonna be the hardest part to find. You will need the MV50 style shrouding, as the MS50 style won't fit right. So if ya see shrouding, try and see if the left side fan vent thingy has the cut-out part for the pedal. If so, it's what you are looking for. If the fan cover is perfectly round, then it's wrong, and it's the MS50 type.

The pedals will be easy. Many fit though. You can fit either style rack on it, but the chrome bigger one is what that one had. Tail light's gonna be hard to find too. Maybe an old Beetle tail light would look good til ya find one.

That gas tank cover is gonna be hard to find too. That style you want will have a V shape pressed into it, and the older MS50 has like 3 or so stripes pressed into it, and it will fit, but awkwardly.

The gas cap might be easier to find.

I would love your tires! I especially like that back one. I'd run it a long time, as my rear one is a '54 and it's almost bald now.

All my stands are sorta bent and bad, and I don't have one on mine right now. I see yours is missing. I'm gonna just mount a kickstand on mine, since these start in neutral without having to move as ya pedal.

Your chain guard looks nicer than mine. Is that rust and dirt on the wheels or just dirt?

That's the original seat, but if I were you, I'd replace it with an oldy Schwinn one or something. You can get new rubber tops for them from Motor West, and they also have nice on-line instructions to stretch it back on, but I'd still skip it. Those scare me.

Cables are all available at Motor West. I see the choke is mounted sideways. It should be up & down, on the steering post right next to where it is. I just replaced my shifter cable which is about nine feet long. I bought 10 feet. I'd recommend getting it from Motor West too, as it took me all day today replacing mine, and it was a nightmare job. Not like I've not been through it before though.

I wanna see this project through with ya!

Nice pics Andrew!

There just were a couple of tanks on ebay from someone in Idaho!

Shrouding is gonna be a tough find like DZ said.

It's taken me over a year but mine is almost back together!

Good luck with your labor of love!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Thanks for the info dz

This is gonna be a slow resto LOL

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

are you fucking kidding me? did they survive being bounced off the rack ok?

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

I know. It's cool. I have all the time in the world, don't you? hehehheeee

I wanna help ya get that thing makin' you wish you never had anything else!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

you only tied the bikes up on the front. I learned from losing a canoe off of my blazer that you need opposing forces to keep stuff on and tight. good find, i sitll wish i won that auction!!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Really nice pictures!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Nice bikes! And awesome rims on your Saab... Panasports? I live in the Finger Lakes region. Once I have more than one running ped I want to do a winery tour with a friend or two.

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Wow. Way to go Andrew. Those photos are amazing. Looks like you had yourself a pretty good time!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

wow, andrew

i thought after all the suggestions on chat, that you could never have too many straps, that you would have practically a hundred tie downs.

including cross bracing and individual tires, i usually have at least 5 bungees on my non moving work bench, and would expect to have a few more on a moving vehicle's trailer.

have fun with the restoration.

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

haha the overwealming response i got from chat and posting here was "dont worry about it" im glad i did.

The bikes are fine. The fronts were securely fastened to the trailer the right way. Other people suggested i use a backstrap too. so i did.

The reason the back tire slipped off the rail coming home is these factors :

1. the backstrap only pulled the bike toward the front, not toward down.

2. Mopeds are not motorcyles nor do they weigh enough to stay down just by gravity.

3. It started to rain as i got home, and that made the wheels slide in the huge rails built for a motorcyle.

4. Coming off the freeway and down to a stop trying to get home, the weight swung forward, and the bikes went up not sideways or down. Firmly securing the back rim to the rail will prevent this happnening in the future.

All in all it was fine, the plethera of straps made it catch itself and nothing went catastrophic.

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

sweet saab..

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Jon from the finger lakes - I go out there all the time, we have friends on lake keuka in Hammondsport, next time ill give you a shout!

The rims on the saab are ultra ultra rare. In 10 Years of looking, ive only seen 3 sets. One in maine, one in Geneva new york on a junker, and the set on my car.

They look exactly like the old 8 spoke ronals that fit on 87 and down saab 900/99's but these are for the later models with the pin in the wheel and the different later model bolt pattern. 9000 option in 88 and a very rare one at that. Most are all gone!

they are great for chaining your moped too tho!

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

Hey Andrew,

I have seen one Saab 900 in Ithaca(where I'm at) with similar rims, but I think it might be the earlier 87 and down kind you speak of.

We should get together sometime when you're in the area.

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

toe fur threadkiller /

that allstate looks fine the way it is...

Re: Magnums in the Hills , allstates Trailers

ya i like the allstate looking like that. Gonna need a carb and tank and tires and brakes tho. Also the rims need respoking or im gonna crash. Cables. Lights. Its not concors ready lol

Jon , the 87 and downs had the 8 spoke ronals as a factory option, there were loads of em, some silver, some black and gold. Most silver. They were super cool. They used to say "Carol Shelby" on them , so we called them shelby ronals.

The new ones are called "starflights" or something like that, they just look exactly like the old ronals, just impossible to find.
