I got on my bike this morning, only to find that my speedo is not working. So I thought to myself, "who cares? Maybe I'll just remove the whole stupid thing. I hate the way the bulky Tomos speedo housing looks anyway." Do I need a speedometer?

i think speedos are pointless too, i often remove them from bikes just because i know how fast im going usually and preffer the less bulky look anyways.
I thought this post was going to be about bananna hammocks. I am glad its not.
I told my girl that I broke my speedo this morning... she was a little confused.
nah speedos are good since they tell you the time
How come the speedo on my Batavus VA goes up to like 60? Is that because it's from Europe and not mph but ?ph. I am pretty sure that they made batavus VA's in America, is there a chance that mine is an import? If so, that would be so rad!
if it goes all the way to sixty, it probly in kilometers.
dude no way! T(omos)MPH is the most respected worlwide measuring system for race speeds!
Screw speedo's mine broke about 2.000 miles ago and I still have not yet to get it fixed.
Thats' what I was thinking brandon, but, they made my model in the U.S. So, i'm thinking it might be an import.
That's what I'm talking about, Corey. I mean... what the heck do I need it for anyway? If I am keeping up with traffic (or blowing by traffic), that's all that matters. I don't need to know how fast I'm going. :C (dude w/ handlebar mustache)
Bah! These companies just buy whatever speedo is available. The same speedo can be used on small motorcycles as well making the unit less expensive as it can cover a wider variety of applications than a 30mph speedo. BTW none of mine work either, cheap junk and only necessary on a kitted bike as most mopeds are incapable of breaking the speed limits anywhere.
The ladies at the pool admire my snug Speedo..
Mine was broken when I got my Kreidler and the glass fell out of the headlight while riding so I put one of the bullet headlights on and it looks way better. I like to have my speedo for when I tune things to see if there is a difference
Someone here said earlier that speedos are "fun". I agree and am waiting on BJ to send me new cables for the Garelli and the Derbi. Not a safety item like mirrors, but still helpful for mileage estimates and ...well, fun. I bet some who don't bother with them are merely obscuring the bike's long term mileage.
some good points being made... the point about tuning makes some sense. I guess I know so little about tuning, that it doesn't make much difference yet. the "long term mileage" comment makes good sense too. If I ever wanted to sell or trade my bike, I would want to have the mileage as acurate as possible. maybe I should by a new drive? not convinced yet though...
Found a kool mini speedo for my Maxi, looks like an old Auto Meter, but it's VDO. I just like the way gauges look, even my bicycles all have speedos.
where the heck did you get the mini-speedo? that looks sweet.
butnut if you painted an elephant turd and put it on your bike it would look hot.
stupid question, but I'll ask anyway... if I wanted to change my speedo (pun intended), how would I know if it is the speedo, cable, or drive that is broken - without having to buy the stuff?
I should have named this post - Who is wearing a speedo? But, oh well... I always think of the best thing to say when it is too late.
Just go to a bicycle shop and get a speedo there. My speedo cable just broke on my puch and I bought a Cateye bike speedometer for $30. It's a hell of a lot smaller, the size of a matchbox, has an odometer that I was able to enter my original mileage on, goes to 65mph, has 2 mileage distance trackers, and average/max speed. Only flaw is it's not backlit for night, you could probably find one though.
I do believe the speedo has to be calibrated to the wheel size you are using. I had a Cateye on my bicycle and I had to program the wheel size in. Otherwise your measurements will be inaccurate. For VDO/Huret speedos, the calibration done through the gearing in the speedo unit - with a Cateye, it's electronic, but still based on revolutions of the weel.
fuck. matt already posted my funny photo of hulk hogan.
I don't care so much about how fast I'm going (or not) but I use my tripmeter for a fuel gage and odometer for maintenance intervals. I'd really be lost without either of them.

hehe, thanks harold. Found that and my CEV speedo on ebay. It's accurate enough as the stock Puch drive is VDO. To test the speedo and cable, unhook the cable at the drive. With the square cable end exposed (inside the outer casing) get an electric drill and clamp it on the end. Run the drill and if the speedo reads, it's good and the drive unit is bad. A cable only goes bad if it snaps, pull the guts out and grease it if it's still good. Good luck.
Looks like my cable snapped... new cable = easy fix. Thanks for the advice. And... did you call me "Harold"? I don't want to get wrapped up in all the hate going around. I am Jeremy from Jeffersonville, IN. No relation to Harold.
no dude, just replying to harolds elephant turd comment...now I gotta go to the zoo and look for turds.
