I've been a bicycle rider for years and recently decided that mopeds would be my new love. I don't have one yet. I need some advice. Should I go for this deal:

Could it be too much for a new moped guy to take on? or should I swoop on it? Also, anyone know of a place in the bay area that sells mopeds?

that wasnt what i was intending - but do you think we should? i am naive when it comes to mopeds and am trying to educate myself on what a good deal looks like - does this deal suck or something?
Indians are pretty mopeds (you can probably find some in the photos section -- just look up at the top there), but they're not very common. That means that they're hard to find parts for and there aren't many people who have experience fixing them. If you get a Puch or a Tomos or something, you'll easily be able to fix things when they break, and you'll be able to use the advice and tutorials that people have put together. $400 is a little steep for a non-running moped, but considering it used to run well and that it's in SF, I don't think it's completely unreasonable. If you're new to mopeds, that probably isn't the best choice because of the lack of parts availability and technical support,. However, that doesn't mean you couldn't get it and figure it out yourself if you wanted to badly enough.
save yourself a LOT of trouble and buy a new Tomos Sprint.

Don't buy an Indian moped for your first. It's a 4 stroke and not tuneable... Start off with something easy like a Puch, Vespa, Sachs, or something with a Minarelli motor.
Oh yeah, or Tomos... Those aren't so bad either... ;) I prefer a Puch of Vespa, but that's just me.

i was joking about flagging that guy... there's been a rash of people wanting everyone to flagrantly flag craigslist moped listings lately.
An Indian would be a steep learning curve for a first moped. For a first bike, you should find something simple that runs but needs work. that way you can earn cred by fixing it yourself and learn a lot, but you still get the fun of riding (and the important life lessons of having to push it home occasionally).
If you want a new moped, go with whichever Tomos you want. They are priced from $1000 to $2000. You can get a Sprint for $1000, and they are great. Will last forever. If you want vintage, look for a Puch step through with the E50 engine, that does not need too much work, or a late model Tomos that hasn't been modified or trashed. Peace. Jerry.
Only two choices in USA. Staton-inc.com for bike kit, or TOMOS, for a real moped. Own them both. Staton is a good kit, but TOMOS is a MOPED.
Kinetic TFR moped is an option for a new moped, It is a 2005 new old stock and rumored to be a Vespa moped clone.You can get one for $899 or less. And also there is an Indian cone moped with electric start , but the wheel look to be fourteen inch and i have not seen any one on here say they have one that i know about, and it is a four cycle engine.
