Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

So... I just bought a Moped online from someone fairly close to me. It seems to have a number of items that could use attention..

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to begin? haha!

See below:

"Vehicle Description

Wouild be a nice restoration project or just restore and drive to save gas! The moped was owned by my uncle who passed away recently, we are selling to clear estate. Dont really know alot about the moped, but will try to answer any questions you might have, It has always been kept in a garage. Pick up only. I dont think there is another one of these on ebay it is in really good shape for its age with minimal rust and no rust through. Paint is in fine condition. "

Another garelli in KY... Awesome!

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

hi david, congrats on the garelli. Always nice to see more around Louisville. I've got a few Garelli's myself, so if you need some advice or parts, send me an email. Also, once it's up and running, there is a local branch of the moped army in town, the Bourbon Bandits, you should come ride.

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

Thanks! I took it to a local moped guru (Thanks nate!) after my many days of attempting to start it.. Seems mostly the carb cleaning I did was overly inadequate, so he was able to fix that up.

Right now the only issues I am having are, 1) the petcock on the bike is wrong so it doesnt get enough fuel when running below half a tank and it gets just ENOUGH fuel so that when it's sitting, it floods the motor (over a course of hours). 2) I need new tires badly :)

Can anyone suggest where I can get a replacement Garelli petcock?

Thanks!

Dave

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

I just bought the same bike, same problem. The previous owner just kinda hose clamped a tractor petcock on. You need a tomos A3 or A5 step-through style petcock. 1977 has them in stock.

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

Are you saying either model will work, or i need one of those but you arent sure which?

Thanks!

they're the same petcock. I would suggest you order a new one by phone... any reputable moped shop should have a phone number you can call and they'll be able to tell you exactly what part you need.

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

Ordered... I called 1977 as you suggested. I have my fingers crossed that this fixes my fuel flow issues... it'll be great to be able to get a little further than around the block ! =)

I picked up some whitewalls while I was at it ;)

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

Status update... now with the new tires. She runs pretty consistently. New pic for your viewing pleasure.

Now I need to figure out why it feels like I'm wobbling everywhere when I ride. (didn't with the old tires)

bump?

Someone compliment the bling!

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

very nice... is it missing a speedo cable?

important note: make sure when ordering a new petcock that you get the one that points down, not to the side. Garellis have the petcock so close to the carb that you won't have enough room to use a fuel filter without risking a kink in the hose.

A Maxi petcock works well as a replacement. I have one on my rally sport and have had no problems, other than the fact that it draws gas from kind of high in the tank. This leaves you with a portion of the tank at the bottom where gas sits untouched. As for the wobbling. You probably didn't put the wheels on tight enough. I would have said it was the fork being loose but if you just changed the wheels then that's probably it. Nice bike though man... makes mine look shitty (and it's not).

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

Yeah I'm missing the speedo cable..

AND Yeah... I have the replacement petcock that points at an angle away from the carb... witha kink in my line. No problems with that so far but it's annoying.

Maximojo.. do you happen to know the # of the Maxi petcock replacement?

Thanks guys!

This one looks exactly like mine but mine does not have a chrome lever. I think this should work the same though since the threading must be the same

Also... I should mention that it's kind of hard to maneuver in there but don't let that fool you... it fits.

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

that is hard to visualize fitting on my tank... as in I can't determine if that would work or not.. hm

Re: Fixing up/ Repairing 1980 Garelli Rally Sport

the old......wrong, petcock that was on the bike when I bought it.

Wrong or broken.. not sure.

And the new OMG one I put on... I think for a Tomas A3 or something:

None of these seem to be correct... though maybe the first one was correct and just hosed?
