agh mopeds.

so i finally got a bigger jet to put in my puch... and i roll it down to the gas station and fill it up.

well it started but still went like, 2mph. i think i have a rust poopy tank that's ooking things up.

THEN as i pedal my bike chain FLIES off... i lose the master link... and now i need a new chain. THEN then i try push starting it and the drive chain falls off. then i cried.

i'm taking it into ptown. i'm tired of crying. i want this baby ready for the portland rally.

MOPEDS!

Re: agh mopeds.

im so sad for you right now.

Re: agh mopeds.

im so syked for portland!!! get ready to pop my rally cherry!

Re: agh mopeds.

Oh wow. I feel for you Emily!

That makes me sad too.

It could be rust, but it may be point gap or something as well. Wish I could take a look at it, that story hits me in the stomach.

Re: agh mopeds.

It sounds like you're putting your masterlinks clips on facing the wrong direction.

Re: agh mopeds.

in the meantime i drew a picture.

nahurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Re: agh mopeds.

I like it. The drawing, looks like Ico crossed with a steampunk.

My moped broke down tonight too. Usually I love living on The Hill. Just not when I break down on the bottom of it.

Re: agh mopeds.

is that a cigarette burning in your hair?

Re: agh mopeds.

dude, Emilie, like my Emilie, got you beat. Her bike broke, two weeks ago, when I was riding it. While I was pedaling it home, a pedal snapped off. I got the part that was broken (condenser), replaced it, then it blew again. We took it to Ptown, but Eric was out of town at a rally and the scooter guys refuse to work on mopeds. So it sat for a week, which really sucked because it meant she had to take cabs home from work ($16 x 5) as well as the busses ($1.75 times like 10 or something). So then Eric gets back, and fixes it, costing a cool $180, and that was a nice deal for the amount of work that got done, but the bike originally cost $300 and we've already spent an additional $300 on the fucking thing. So we're looking at an $800 bike or whatever. So she picks it up yesterday, rides to work, works all night, rides it home. Wakes up today, rides it about 15 blocks, then has to call a cab to pick her and the bike up and take it home, because the fucking thing broke again. I'm pretty sure it's just a fouled plug, as it's about 20 degrees warmer than it was last time I tuned it, and it was a little rich then, but fucking a, that thing's going in the goddamn river if I can't fix it REAL quick like. Oh, and we're talking about a 32 mph $800 moped. Boo.

Moral of the story: If you like RIDING mopeds, as opposed to WORKING ON or PAYING PEOPLE TO WORK ON mopeds, a new Tomos is the way to fucking go.

Re: agh mopeds.

thats what i keep telling everyone who asks me......just get a newer or brand new one........then keep a sexy older one for a second bike

Re: agh mopeds.

exactly. And if you ever get tired of that sexy older carabela you have, you can feel free to give it to me.

Re: agh mopeds.

well i can tell you i am not cleaning that tank myself. i live in a cube and small spaces + inexperience + acid type liquids = baaad joo joo.

Re: agh mopeds.

yeah i killed my moped yesterday to lost a little washer that holds on the slide so now i wait

Re: agh mopeds.

so since i'm a boob and think i can fix things on my own, i need imput on a little carb tuning.

i'm running:

50cc tccd kit

72 jet

stock air box

boss pipe

15mm intake

i don't know how to adjust the carb (i know putting the needle higher is leaner and lower is richer but PFFFT i have no idea how that affects anything) and i'm wondering if i need a new air filter.

but i'm going to the bike store to get a new bike chain today.

Re: agh mopeds.

that picture rocks

I have to go look at my pedal chain cause i never knew there was a right or wrong side to a master link clip myself.

good luck.

the shakedown on anything ya just put together is always a pain,.

Re: agh mopeds.

i cleaned my tank in my apartment kitchen using evaporust. non-toxic and available at most auto parts stores for fairly cheap.

Re: agh mopeds.

You should either do the evapo-rust or phosphoric acid. I am also the kind of person who should not be allowed to play with acid, and I didn't screw anything up with phosphoric acid. But if you've got $20-$25 to throw at a gallon of evapo-rust, that's definitely safer.

After consulting my pictures, it looks like the open part of the master link goes the back part of the link ... like the open part opens towards the back tire. But I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong.

Re: agh mopeds.

Your artwork is awesome!

Re: agh mopeds.

I'am so sorry to hear of your recent misfortune, these things happen to the best and the worst of us! try mopedjunkyard for a new chain, the have and ship fast! best of luck to you and I will wipe away your tears!

Re: agh mopeds.

after i realized i spent more on my moped than it was worth, i got it powdercoated to at least make it awesome.

i used this shit called rust remover from autozone. it comes in little bottle like 5 or 6 inches tall and is i think around six bucks or less. it's like a waterbased jell. i put it in and fill the rest of the tank up with water and let it sit overnight. rinsed it out with the powerwasher at the carwash and then put cheap oil in it immediately so it wouldn't flash rust. worked really well and i even got some on the paint overnight and it was fine.

Re: agh mopeds.

good stuff that

Re: agh mopeds.

oh no emily, that sucks. sorry if it was anything we did to your bike. bright side is shiney bike deserves shiny new chains anyway, those were pretty rough. ptown will fix 'deus up. when i cleaned the jet the other night there was thick grease in there, so who knows what's in that tank. mopeds can be heart breakers at times, don't get too frustrated, your so close.

Re: agh mopeds.

i tried calling you to ask: i need to shorted the drive chain and my chain tool is too small (meant for bikes); you know anyone who has one or can help me?

i NEED this running by the rally, whether i lose a limb or not.

Re: agh mopeds.

2mph. is it bogging? does it rev up on the stand but not on the ground? is the throttle responsive? get a filter and some clear line from ptown to see if tank rust is an issue.

"i know putting the needle higher is leaner and lower is richer"

the opposite is true.

I use a bench grinder to carefully take links off of drive chain. There is such a device in the theater department shop in Lincoln Hall. Or I have one I can loan you.

Re: agh mopeds.

hey, Emily, I got yer text, and asked around, and I don't have a chain breaker. I'm gonna keep asking, and hopefully we'll get this worked out.

Re: agh mopeds.

uhhhh. dude it's an old moped. i am not surprised about your story. it sucks but it happens to all of us. i have walked my moped home from miles and miles away plenty of times. tat's just the life of a mopeder. i am so used to it now that when it does break down miles away from home i just laugh, shrug my shoulders, cuss at it a little bit, make out with it. then walk it home. oh yeah then i let it sit for like 2 months just so that i can hate my life then finally work on it and get it running again. it's the circle of life.

Re: agh mopeds.

Since you have a kit, you have a dremel that you portmatched with right? Use the large orange grinding bit to shorten the chain. First off, set the timing again. What gearing are you running? I heard the 50cc tccd has pretty bad lowend. maybe you need to lower the gearing or adjust the clutch?

Eric

Re: agh mopeds.

it will go on the stand then doesn't go much when it's on the road. throttle's fine. bleh.

Re: agh mopeds.

You're correct about needle clip placement, emily. If you place the clip higher on the needle, it makes it run leaner, if you place the clip lower on the needle, it makes it run richer.

Re: agh mopeds.

You're right about the key peice. The round part (side that's not open) goes in the direction of motion (so when the chain spins the round part goes first). Also, you want to put the key side on the outside (pretty obvious since then you can reach it easier).
